Interim Regional President — Controls

Mid-cap listed banking and financial services organisation
The problem this seat exists to solve
Regional growth plans at a banking and financial services organisation with a mid-cap listing need to sit inside clear operating constraints, and an Interim Regional President, under the Group Chief Executive Officer, will spend a 12-month mandate making sure they do.
Growth inside the lines
Regional growth plans in banking are usually built from the top line down. Operating constraints, such as control capacity, conduct oversight, technology change windows and capital, enter later as caveats. With executive authority for twelve months and a reporting line to the Group Chief Executive Officer, the Interim Regional President will reverse that order so that growth is planned inside the constraints from the start.
Constraints as design inputs
A constraint treated as a design input changes what gets proposed. A region that knows its control functions can absorb only so many new products a year stops proposing more than that, and starts arguing about which ones matter most. That argument is far more productive than the one about why controls are slowing everything down, and it puts commercial and control leaders on the same side of the table.
The calls that sit with this role
You will draw up the regional decision framework, including the thresholds that sit with local leaders, and define the proof that investment, capacity and control decisions must meet. Inherited commitments go on, are held or end at your call. You will reject any proposal that transfers cost or risk while leaving no one accountable, and investment that leaves out take-up, dependencies or downside. How the region's leaders are organised, and how issues climb, are yours to approve, and disputes with the operators are yours to settle before anything is funded.
Plans mapped, proposals resized, one route upward
In the first ninety days regional growth plans should be mapped against agreed operating constraints, with control thresholds for local leaders written down. Around month nine growth proposals that outrun regional controls should have been paused or resized, each with an accountable executive. By month 12 growth and control decisions in the region should follow a single escalation route that the next regional leader can run without starting again.
Expansion experience with controls still standing
General management in a business of $845 million or more, employing 1,400 people or more in four countries, is the baseline for this seat. Geographic expansion is the experience that matters most, especially where authority, funding and operating rhythm all had to be reset as you expanded; integration and professionalisation are the others. The capability profile is strategy formation at level 4, with level 3 in judging risk, running an operating cadence and owning a P&L. The Group Chief Executive will want to hear where evidence changed decisions about people, capital or management attention, and how you protected useful controls while exposing what each exception cost.
How selection proceeds
Seven weeks separate the first conversation from the last. It begins in week one with a confidential conversation over video with the Group Chief Executive Officer, followed in the third week by a working session alongside the Board Chair. In the fifth week you face, in person, executive leaders representing each function, and the full board of directors weighs your candidacy in week seven. Each stage brings a response in writing within two working days.

Before you apply — this is an executive role
An interim seat needs work authorisation. A board seat in Australia usually does not.
This is the single most common way a cross-border interim engagement falls apart after it has been agreed. The visa-free position that applies to a non-executive director attending board meetings does not extend to an executive or operating role.
- Position in Australia
- A non-resident non-executive director attending board meetings does not require a work visa. An executive or interim operating role requires a Subclass 482 or equivalent.
