Statutory Audit Estimates and Judgements Managing Director mandate in Tokyo, Japan

Confidential Statutory Audit Estimates and Judgements Managing Director in Tokyo, Japan, reporting to the Head of Audit Quality. Permanent Internal & Statutory Audit appointment at Managing Director level, an ongoing appointment; full time.

The mandate

The Managing Director will strengthen statutory-audit judgement over accounting estimates where uncertainty, management method, data and bias require more than mechanical reperformance. The role will guide difficult engagements without displacing the licensed partner's responsibility or allowing specialist complexity to obscure whether sufficient appropriate evidence supports the opinion.

This permanent portfolio owns estimate methodology, consultation, quality review, inspection learning and capability. It must connect risk assessment to the chosen audit response, treat contradictory evidence seriously and distinguish an acceptable range from unexamined tolerance of management's preferred point.

The Managing Director may require additional procedures, block internal quality clearance and refer unresolved technical matters to formal governance. The licensed engagement partner remains responsible for the statutory opinion. Specialists contribute evidence; they do not own the audit conclusion.

The first year will refresh estimate guidance, review priority files, run cross-engagement calibration and verify remediation of recurring weaknesses. Success means files demonstrate sceptical reasoning and transparent evidence, not simply longer memoranda surrounding unchanged conclusions.

What you will own

  • Update estimate methodology covering inherent-risk factors, methods, assumptions, data, uncertainty, bias and retrospective review.
  • Establish consultation thresholds based on judgement complexity, estimation uncertainty and potential reporting consequence.
  • Review priority files for linkage between risk, procedure, specialist work, contradictory evidence and final conclusion.
  • Calibrate how engagement teams develop independent points, ranges or other approaches rather than merely checking management arithmetic.
  • Require explicit evaluation of management bias across estimates and cumulative directional choices.
  • Strengthen retrospective review so prior outcomes inform current risk without substituting hindsight for reasonable past judgement.
  • Analyse inspection findings for root causes in supervision, scepticism, competence, time or methodology application.
  • Develop bilingual technical reviewers able to challenge senior partners and specialists with precision.

Candidate qualifications

  • At least 18 years in external statutory audit, including Director, Managing Director or partner-level responsibility for complex estimates.
  • Active Japanese CPA or equivalent locally recognised statutory-audit licence with current standing.
  • Evidence of changing an audit conclusion or requiring more work because contradictory estimate evidence was underweighted.
  • Deep knowledge of ISA 540 principles, methods, assumptions, data, uncertainty, bias, specialists and auditor-developed ranges.
  • A case where retrospective review improved current risk assessment without applying inappropriate hindsight.
  • Experience challenging both management and audit partners while respecting the licensed signatory's ultimate responsibility.
  • A record of improving file quality through changed reasoning and supervision rather than documentation expansion alone.

Working terms and boundaries

  • This ongoing appointment has first-year gates after guidance approval, priority reviews, calibration and remediation backcheck.
  • Technical challenge and internal quality clearance are included; only the licensed engagement partner signs the audit opinion.
  • Hybrid work includes file review, consultation and calibration in Japanese and English professional settings.
  • The role cannot prepare management estimates, select client assumptions or accept specialist output without audit evaluation.
  • Year-one completion requires stronger priority files, evidenced root-cause remediation and capable technical succession.
