Four-Day Workforce-Evidence Board Adviser mandate in Reykjavík, Iceland · Digital News Publishing

A digital-publication board needs independent workforce challenge before extending a four-day week whose output gains coexist with deadline compression, hidden overtime and unequal role eligibility.

The mandate

A digital publisher piloted a four-day week in product, editorial and corporate teams. Output and engagement appear higher, yet deadline work shifted into unrecorded evenings, customer support remained on five-day coverage and freelancers absorbed some compression. Employees in live news and revenue roles question eligibility fairness. The board must decide whether to extend, redesign or stop the model using credible human and service evidence.

The adviser will help directors distinguish productivity, work intensification, demand transfer, reduced low-value activity and genuine wellbeing. Advice will examine different work types rather than insist on one schedule. The board needs explicit hypotheses, protected worker voice and thresholds for reversal if output, quality, customer coverage, inclusion or health deteriorate after novelty fades.

Three days monthly cover evidence challenge, worker listening and private chair counsel, plus six people-and-editorial-standards meetings over nine months. Written observations follow within three working days. The adviser will attend comparable sessions with eligible, ineligible and freelance populations and will flag missing time or service data before any expansion decision.

The adviser has no line or executive authority, cannot set schedules, approve overtime, determine eligibility, direct editorial work, make employment decisions, negotiate terms or vote. Executives and directors retain those responsibilities. The adviser may recommend a controlled extension, different model or stop condition but cannot implement the chosen design.

The nine-month appointment ends after the post-expansion review. One two-month renewal may be authorised if a seasonal news cycle is needed for evidence. Relationships with publishers, unions, work-design vendors, wellbeing providers, productivity platforms or campaign groups are conflicts requiring disclosure and chair-directed recusal, restricted information or termination.

Why the board wants this voice

Leaders who sponsored the pilot are invested in its success, while employee experience varies sharply by work type and bargaining power. Headline output can rise through hidden effort or shifted labour. Independent work-design judgment helps directors test whether improvement is sustainable and equitable without taking management or editorial authority.

What you will own

  • Press the board to define productivity, quality, service, wellbeing, inclusion and hidden-work hypotheses before expansion.
  • Test actual hours, deadline compression, meeting reduction, work transfer, staffing and customer coverage by role family.
  • Compare eligible, ineligible, shift-based, part-time, disabled, caring and freelance populations for differential consequence.
  • Challenge outcome claims for seasonality, novelty, selection, backlog release and manager-reporting bias.
  • Shape controlled extension, alternative schedule, workload redesign and reversal options with measurable decision gates.
  • Examine worker voice, overtime reporting, manager norms and psychological safety around admitting unfinished work.
  • Maintain board evidence, dissent, limitations, stop conditions and follow-up measures across the trial portfolio.

Candidate qualifications

  • Advised boards or led evidence-based reduced-work-time trials across different professional and service roles.
  • Distinguished true productivity from hidden overtime, work transfer, backlog release and short-term novelty.
  • Analysed eligibility fairness across shift, customer-facing, freelance, disabled, part-time and caring populations.
  • Designed decision gates covering output, quality, wellbeing, inclusion and customer service rather than engagement alone.
  • Engaged employee representatives and workers without promising a preferred schedule or employment outcome.
  • Maintained independence from work-design vendors, productivity platforms, publishers, unions and advocacy groups.

Non-negotiables

  • Can attend six Reykjavík and international workforce-evidence sessions during the nine-month appointment.
  • Will disclose publisher, union, vendor, wellbeing-provider, platform and campaign relationships.
  • Brings rigorous reduced-work-time trial governance; general flexible-work advocacy is insufficient.
  • Accepts no authority over schedules, eligibility, overtime, editorial work, employment decisions or negotiation.
  1. 49 words maximum. Describe a reduced-work-time result that weakened after hidden labour or transfer was measured.
  2. 49 words maximum. Which vendor, publisher, union or advocacy relationship could affect your independence?
  3. 49 words maximum. What stop condition would you set before extending a four-day model?
