A national research cloud needs an eight-month board adviser to test open compute hardware economics once firmware stewardship, sparing, field repair and refresh heterogeneity are included.
The mandate
The board repeatedly debates whether open compute designs will lower research-cloud cost and supplier dependence or transfer integration, firmware and field-service work into an organisation not built to carry it. Procurement models component prices, operators see spares and heterogeneity, security sees firmware custody, and sustainability teams value repairability without a measured lifecycle. The standing question is which openness creates durable operating choice.
The adviser will contribute two working days monthly, lead a monthly hardware-lifecycle challenge, attend three infrastructure-committee meetings and complete three data-centre, repair or supplier-ecosystem visits. A material security or capital question receives an initial view within two business days; routine papers receive comments within five. Preparation and the stated attendance are included.
The appointment is fixed at eight months and closes with the next hardware capital plan. At month seven, the chair may propose a separately scoped sourcing-assurance role, but renewal requires a new board resolution and conflict declaration; no automatic continuation exists. Unused time expires and does not carry into procurement or deployment.
The adviser holds no line authority and carries no executive, design, firmware-signing, procurement, safety or data-centre operating responsibility. Management owns architecture and service delivery, and directors decide capital. The adviser may challenge evidence, request lifecycle comparisons and shape gates, but cannot select equipment, approve firmware, direct technicians or negotiate suppliers.
Up to three unrelated commitments may continue. A role with a server, component, firmware, integrator, repair, recycling or cloud supplier, research institution seeking capacity or infrastructure investor creates a conflict requiring disclosure and possible recusal. Sales commissions, sourcing fees and compensation tied to hardware volume or disposal value are prohibited.
Why the board wants this voice
Directors hear attractive acquisition and sustainability cases without one view of the operational capability required after installation. The room lacks a leader who has governed open hardware through firmware change, mixed generations, component failure and responsible retirement. Independent lifecycle experience is needed before optionality on purchase becomes dependency on scarce internal integration skills.
What you will own
- Press management to define openness across mechanical design, components, firmware, management interfaces, diagnostics, spares, repair and data portability.
- Test lifecycle economics for qualification, integration, firmware engineering, field labour, inventory, failure, downtime, refresh and retirement.
- Challenge supply diversification where supposedly interchangeable components require unique validation, tooling or support knowledge.
- Examine firmware authority, provenance, vulnerability response, signing, rollback and long-term maintenance after original suppliers exit.
- Shape stage gates for laboratory qualification, limited fleet, mixed-generation operation, repair capability and scaled deployment.
- Probe repairability and circularity claims using actual failure populations, parts harvesting, warranty, data destruction and residual use.
- Frame the board’s capital posture on designs to adopt, constrain, partner, standardise or defer, with retained exit routes.
Candidate qualifications
- Governed open or disaggregated server hardware through complex production qualification, field operation, repair and multi-generation refresh.
- Built lifecycle economics that included firmware, integration, spares, labour, downtime and heterogeneous fleet cost.
- Managed firmware custody and vulnerability response after component or original-design suppliers changed support posture.
- Exposed false component interchangeability caused by electrical, firmware, management or qualification differences.
- Operated repair and retirement programmes with defensible data destruction, parts reuse and residual-value evidence.
- Advised a capital board independently of hardware, repair, recycling, cloud and integration vendors.
Non-negotiables
- Can attend all three Helsinki committee meetings and complete three lifecycle ecosystem visits within eight months.
- Will disclose hardware, component, firmware, repair, recycling, research and investor relationships.
- Accepts that architecture, firmware, procurement, safety and operating authority remains with accountable management.
