The mandate
The board repeatedly asks whether successful robot demonstrations prove a scalable contractor product or only expert-assisted projects. Field teams precondition sites, engineers remain nearby and productivity comparisons omit setup, surveying, rework and disrupted trades. Contractors like labour relief but resist new coordination and liability. The adviser’s standing question is what evidence converts a technical capability into repeatable workflow adoption without transferring hidden effort to customers or weakening site safety.
The commitment is four days monthly: one deployment-evidence review, one product-and-commercial challenge, chair preparation and either committee attendance or a site observation. Five committee meetings and four controlled site visits are included. A material deployment or partnership question receives a response within forty-eight hours. Live site direction, safety decisions, product release, contract negotiation and customer commitments remain with management and authorised duty holders.
The term lasts ten months through two product releases and the next regional expansion decision. One two-month renewal may be approved if a named contractor proof remains incomplete and conflicts are refreshed. The adviser concludes with an adoption-stage framework, decision history, site archetypes and evidence gates for productisation, partner expansion and capital. The independent chair decides renewal after testing whether executives can apply the framework themselves.
The adviser has no line authority, executive responsibility, site-control role, product approval or board vote. Contractors and principal duty holders govern sites; engineers approve equipment; management negotiates; directors allocate capital. The adviser may challenge evidence, recommend a constrained release or pause a scale thesis, but cannot certify safety, direct workers, approve method statements, select customers, set performance claims or represent a contractor.
Relationships involving rival robotics companies, contractors, equipment groups, labour providers, safety advisers, investors, insurers or prospective channel partners require disclosure. A live role for a customer or bidder under review triggers recusal. Other non-conflicting appointments are permitted within the stated cadence. Compensation is not linked to deployments, units sold, labour savings, safety claims, regional launches, valuation or partner selection.
Why the board wants this voice
Engineers see improved autonomy, commercial teams see qualified pipeline and contractors see project-specific risk. No director has repeatedly moved novel equipment from protected trials into ordinary multi-trade sites. The board wants an operator who can expose customer effort, adoption friction and workflow consequence without dismissing technical progress or acting as a shadow safety authority.

- Shape board gates for product release, field support, commercial claim, partner appointment and regional entry.
- Maintain independent records of failures, exceptions, conflicts, customer effort, dissent and invalidated assumptions.
- Leave the committee a repeatable adoption review tied to complete workflow evidence and mature customer behaviour.
Candidate qualifications
- Has commercialised robotics, automation or advanced equipment into variable construction or industrial field workflows beyond supplier-assisted demonstrations and controlled test sites.
- Can evidence a launch sequence changed when expert support and site preparation were measured honestly.
- Understands construction sequencing, duty holders, method statements, trade interfaces, equipment service and contractor economics.
- Has challenged product and sales leaders without making engineering release or site-safety decisions.
- Can distinguish machine cycle time from complete crew, workflow and project productivity.
- Is independent of relevant robotics firms, contractors, equipment vendors, insurers, investors and safety advisers.
Non-negotiables
- Can attend five Tokyo committee meetings and complete four controlled construction-site evidence visits.
- Will not certify safety, direct site work, approve equipment or validate productivity claims through this role.
- Brings direct field adoption of industrial technology; laboratory robotics or venture investing alone is insufficient.
