The mandate
The committee keeps returning to where AI should become intrinsic to future network control rather than remain an external optimisation layer. Competing research groups propose learned air-interface components, autonomous operations, edge inference and AI-managed core functions, but their papers use different maturity, energy, observability and fallback assumptions, making the portfolio look more coherent than it is.
The adviser will commit three days each month, divided among research evidence review, a chair or portfolio session, and preparation or individual challenge with technical leaders. Five committee meetings are included; written reactions to a time-sensitive partnership or research-funding question are expected within three business days, while standards representation and programme delivery are expressly excluded.
The initial appointment spans eleven months through the next long-range research allocation. The committee chair may propose that the board renew it once for up to five months if a named testbed or partnership choice remains undecided; future-network standards remaining unsettled is not, by itself, grounds for renewal.
The role is advisory and carries no line authority, voting right or executive responsibility for architecture, research claims, patent decisions, standards positions, supplier selection or capital. Research and business executives must sponsor their own recommendations; the adviser tests evidence, surfaces option value and records dissent without presenting an independent view as settled industry direction.
Concurrent academic and non-competing technology appointments are acceptable after disclosure. A paid role with a direct equipment rival, material interest in a proposed silicon or cloud partner, contingent economics tied to a patent pool, or confidential access to another operator’s future architecture creates a conflict requiring restricted papers, recusal or termination.
Why the board wants this voice
The board has deep telecommunications experience but lacks a member who has governed learned control systems across radio, edge, cloud and operations under uncertain interfaces. Management currently rewards ambitious end-state narratives without comparable fallback and measurement evidence. The chair wants an independent technical investor who can preserve strategic options while still forcing costly research bets to earn their next stage.
What you will own
- Press each AI-native proposal to name its network decision, training and inference location, observability, deterministic fallback and consequence of model drift.
- Test research claims against representative channel, traffic, failure, adversarial and energy conditions rather than isolated laboratory improvement.
- Challenge compute-placement assumptions spanning device, radio edge, regional cloud and core for latency, cost, privacy, resilience and lifecycle operations.
- Shape maturity gates that separate publishable experiments, interoperable testbeds, product candidates and architecture commitments requiring irreversible investment.
- Probe ecosystem choices for data rights, model portability, silicon dependency, patent leverage, standards uncertainty and the ability to exit a partner path.
- Compare portfolio scenarios where AI remains assistive, becomes closed-loop under constraints or proves unsuitable for the proposed network function.
- Frame the committee’s annual decision record with funded hypotheses, rejected certainty, expiring assumptions, dissent and evidence required before the next gate.
Candidate qualifications
- Held senior research, architecture or product authority across radio, core, network automation or edge-cloud systems for a major operator or equipment provider.
- Deployed learned network optimisation or control and can evidence where fallback, observability, latency or data quality limited autonomy.
- Allocated material research capital among uncertain technical pathways without treating standards participation as proof of product readiness.
- Evaluated AI compute across device, edge and cloud under energy, service-continuity and operational-maintenance constraints.
- Negotiated research or technology partnerships involving data, models, silicon, patents and exit rights across several ecosystem participants.
- Advised a board on a pre-standard technology thesis while clearly separating current evidence, informed hypothesis and unresolved external dependency.
Non-negotiables
- Can attend all five Helsinki committee meetings and travel quarterly to the designated Oulu or European research session.
- Will disclose equipment-vendor, operator, standards, patent-pool, university, cloud and silicon relationships before reviewing the portfolio.
