Mattress Recovery-Feedstock Network Architect mandate in Madrid, Spain · Post-Use Mattress Material Recovery

A mattress producer coalition needs a takeback network that controls contamination and fire exposure while delivering separated foam, fibre, wood and steel to evidenced outlets.

The mandate

Producer and municipal forecasts count discarded mattresses by units, but a collection crew encounters wet, infested, burned, heavily soiled and mechanically compacted items whose safe handling and downstream value differ radically. Retail takeback routes, civic sites and illegal-dumping pickups deliver incompatible loads to yards with finite fire separation. Dismantlers report tonnes processed while foam and textile outlets reject grades that then become residue. The commission is to design a practical household-to-material network that prices difficult cohorts and prevents collection success from masking unsafe storage or unusable outputs.

Five deliverables constitute the brief: a generation and channel baseline; a field condition and acceptance taxonomy; a collection, quarantine and depot network with seasonal capacity; a dismantling-to-offtake specification for foam, fibre, wood and metals; and a pilot and phased procurement pack. The design must separate retailer exchange, scheduled municipal pickup, civic drop-off and street recovery, define when mattresses remain isolated, and model vehicle cube, manual handling, compaction, fire load, pest exposure, dismantling labour, receiver specification, rejected fractions and lawful disposal.

Milestone one on day eighteen confirms sampled volume and condition. By week eight, the coalition selects catchments and depot archetypes from three options. Detailed operating states, facility requirements and buyer interfaces are completed at month four. A six-week pilot follows two municipal districts and one retailer route through separate reception, dismantling and receiving acceptance. At month seven, the consultant delivers cost and funding scenarios, procurement schedules, implementation waves, performance definitions, training cases and an unresolved-risk register suitable for producer and municipal decisions.

The work is accepted when at least 95% of pilot items reconcile collection channel, observed condition, depot position, dismantling outcome, separated weights, receiver acceptance and residue; fire and hygiene specialists approve the proposed handling boundaries; and the network absorbs a thirty-percent seasonal surge plus a depot compartment closure using evidenced labour, vehicles and space. Each material yield must be reported against received mattress cohorts, not just dismantled items. Finance must reproduce full cost by channel and condition, including failed collection, quarantine, rejected output and disposal.

The client provides retailer delivery data, municipal bulky-waste records, street-recovery estimates, depot layouts, incident history, contractor terms, producer sales, composition families, processor specifications, disposal invoices and access to homes, sites and receivers. The team does not diagnose infestation, approve worker methods, design fire systems, set producer fees, award contracts, operate collections, broker recovered materials or certify EPR and recycling claims. Competent client specialists decide safety, hygiene and compliance. Where illegal-disposal volume is uncertain, the model must show a range and trigger rather than invent precision.

Why this is external work

Manufacturers, municipalities, retailers and processors each control one segment and use different denominators to describe success. Independent design can expose condition and residue costs without favouring a collection channel or material buyer. The commission ends with an accepted procurement-ready network and pilot record; the coalition remains responsible for implementation, public service and producer obligations.

What you will own

  • Sample mattress flows across retailer exchange, household appointment, civic drop-off and street recovery, retaining failed access, refusal, unsafe condition and illegal accumulation.
  • Define field and depot states for dry accepted, wet, infested suspected, fire damaged, chemically contaminated, compacted, quarantine, dismantling-ready and disposal-only items.
  • Design catchments, vehicle configurations, unloading and isolation capacity, fire compartments, covered storage, dismantling feed and disruption alternatives.
  • Specify separated-material evidence from mattress identity and condition cohort through foam, textile, timber and steel output, receiver test, rejection and residue.
  • Model complete economics by channel and condition, including household service, cube, double handling, hygiene, fire controls, dismantling, revenue, rejected output and disposal.
  • Lead the district-and-retailer pilot, testing surge and compartment loss while leaving live safety and workforce decisions with operators.
  • Produce procurement lots, service levels, evidence schedules and implementation gates that producer and municipal sponsors can adopt without the consulting team.

Candidate qualifications

  • Has designed bulky post-consumer, mattress, furniture-waste or comparable heterogeneous material collection and processing networks.
  • Can evidence a recovery forecast changed after wet, contaminated, infested or otherwise rejected cohorts were sampled physically.
  • Understands household collection, vehicle cube, depot fire exposure, hygiene boundaries, dismantling, material grading, receiver acceptance and EPR economics.
  • Has reconciled producer, municipal, retailer and processor evidence without assuming one participant’s reported denominator is complete.
  • Can distinguish item collected, safely accepted mattress, dismantled unit, separated output, receiver-approved material and disposed residue.
  • Has delivered a live multi-channel pilot and procurement pack under independent safety and compliance authority.

Non-negotiables

  • Will observe household, retail and municipal channels plus dismantling and receiving sites before final network selection.
  • Will not diagnose pests, approve fire or worker safety, set producer fees, select contractors or certify recovery claims.
  • Brings direct bulky-waste or mattress recovery design; general municipal consulting without material-outlet experience is insufficient.
  • Will deliver five accepted artefacts and exact EUR monthly-equivalent arithmetic within seven months.
  1. 49 words maximum. Which mattress condition most changed your expected collection or material-recovery economics?
  2. 49 words maximum. How would you prevent tonnes dismantled from overstating receiver-accepted output?
  3. 49 words maximum. What municipal and processor evidence must be available before catchments are selected?
