Sandstone Essayist: an engineer's argument as the first page
Sandstone Essayist belongs to the Signature collection's Essayist composition, which turns a leader's most recent essay into the home page and places the author in the margin beside it. Its default leader is Sofia Ferraro, a fictional chief technology officer of Corvalta Mobile, a challenger operator in Italy. Her opening essay argues that an operator forced to remove a supplier should redesign each radio site during the swap, not copy it. Everything else on the site exists to test that claim.
The cover: Sofia's essay in the wide column
The masthead is centred, with the wordmark and page links in italic. Beneath it the home page divides into a narrow margin on the left and a wide reading column on the right, roughly one part to three. The wide column carries the essay's topic, date and reading time in small moss-green capitals, then its title in very large italic type: A forced equipment swap is the cheapest time to redesign a radio site. Her standfirst follows, then the essay's whole first paragraph with a dropped initial, and a link to continue reading.
The margin holds her portrait, her role, her name and one sentence only: the first sentence of her biography, about a site she planned above L'Aquila in 2000 that covered one village instead of two. A visitor meets the engineer who distrusts maps before reading her case for redesign. On a phone the order reverses, so the essay comes first and the margin follows, with the portrait reduced to a small image beside her name.
What sits beneath the essay
Below the cover, a centred band between two rules, headed The enduring idea, sets Sofia's philosophy as a large quotation: she trusts a network only as far as it has been tested in the conditions it will fail in. A numbered reading list then offers her two remaining essays as items 02 and 03, one on keeping Open RAN to an accountable second source and one on who owns the power cut once copper is switched off.
Three figures follow: 9,800 radio sites, €305 million of network capital expenditure and a 53% fall in electricity per gigabyte between 2022 and 2025. Her thesis, introduction and four costed proof points come next, then a closing record listing her directorship at Fondazione Calvenna and her two degrees beside an endorsement from Corvalta's chief executive, and finally her own terms for contact.
Six chapters and a board essay
The career page treats each appointment as a chapter of a book. A centred heading reads Chapter 1 with the dates, then the role and the full record: employer, ownership, revenue, reporting line, team, budget, mandate, outcomes and the reason for moving on. Sofia's six chapters run from Corvalta back to a planning job in Abruzzo, and the format suits a career that crossed sides. A search partner can follow her moves between operator, supplier and tower company in order.
The Board Readiness page is set as a single narrow essay. Her contribution and three judgement examples come first, including the tender in which she stepped out of the scoring because her former employer was bidding. Her first-year approach follows. A bordered panel at the foot then gathers the structured facts: committees she would join, exposure labelled by capacity, 25 available days and her governance learning.
Sandstone in Newsreader and Instrument Serif
The Sandstone palette lays deep olive-black text on a warm parchment ground, with a darker sand for raised panels and a restrained moss green for dates, reading numbers, dropped initials and links. Headlines, quotations and essay text are set in Newsreader, and supporting text in Instrument Serif, so every page reads like a printed monograph rather than a corporate brochure. Essay pages enlarge the body text, which makes a 1,200-word argument comfortable to read on screen.
The palette suits Sofia's readers. Chairs of utilities and transport groups, and search partners filling network roles, are used to engineering reports and board papers, and they will read a long argument if the page lets them. The moss green hints at her energy work without turning the site into a sustainability campaign.
Leaders this design serves
The design rewards any leader whose standing rests on one argued position and who is willing to write it out at length: a utility's operations chief on grid resilience, a general counsel on contract risk or a finance chief on capital allocation. It works for every one of the ten designations. It is less suited to a leader whose case rests on a long list of appointments, because the cover gives a single essay the space a conventional site would give to a career summary.
Questions about this design
- What does the cover show before I have written an essay?
- The wide column switches to a preface: your headline in the large italic setting, followed by the first paragraph of your biography. Most leaders should write an essay before choosing this layout.
- How should I write the opening paragraph of my lead essay?
- It appears alone on the cover in large type, so it should state your position in full. Sofia's first paragraph says what operators should do, why it is harder and what they gain, before any history.
- Can a technology leader with confidential supplier matters use this design?
- Yes. The demonstration describes a restricted supplier, a security assessment and a tender in general terms, without naming any vendor. Keep that discipline, and let the trade-offs and measured results carry the argument.
- Will the Essayist layout show a different leader if I switch lenses?
- Yes. The designation, industry and market controls apply a different leadership lens to the same Essayist layout, and a reset brings back Sofia Ferraro and her network essays.
