Graphite Policy Brief: a regional medicines chief executive's argument, read as a working paper
Graphite Policy Brief pairs the Signature collection's Policy Brief composition with the Graphite palette. Its default leader is Adrian Lim, the fictional group chief executive of Lumaren Healthcare Holdings, a family-owned Singapore maker of generic medicines that sells in eight Southeast Asian countries. His essays argue about how governments buy medicines, how acquired manufacturers should be valued and how a founding family and a hired chief executive should share a company. The design presents those arguments the way a ministry adviser or an investment committee would receive them: as a paper with an abstract, findings and supporting evidence, to be read and disputed.
Page one: an author line, then the paper on tender prices
Adrian's home page opens with a short author block. A small sage line gives his role and market, Singapore / Southeast Asia, and his name follows in a large serif above his headline: that the tender price, the licence and the plant are one decision. His portrait stands narrow at the right, shrinking beside his name on a phone.
The paper itself sits on a slate panel lifted from the charcoal page and capped by a thick sage rule. A label reading Leadership paper / 01 introduces the topic, Public procurement, the date and the reading time. The headline is his lead essay's title, The lowest tender price is paid for later, in shortages, and an Abstract strip states its case in two sentences: that bidding down to marginal cost wins a lot and starves the plant meant to supply it. A single link, Read the full paper, leads into the essay.
Findings, mandate and the supporting record
Beneath the paper a band headed Experience in figures sets out four measures: S$812m of revenue in 2025, 5,200 employees, 2,140 marketing authorisations held with eight regulators, and net debt of 1.8 times EBITDA. A two-column band follows, the word Mandate beside the heading Fields of practice, listing his six areas numbered 01 to 06, from multi-country registration to branded generics in private pharmacies.
His two other papers appear next as Further reading, numbered 02 and 03 with their abstracts: one arguing that an acquired generics company's licences are the asset, the other that a family company does not need rescuing from its family. His thesis and four proof points follow, from six Vietnamese tender lots lost on purpose to a family charter. A record band lists his three boards, his press and his formation, with a quotation from Lumaren's founder about the Jurong factory, before a closing contact panel.
The inner pages a nominating committee will open
The profile starts beside his father, a travelling medicines salesman, on the trunk road through Johor and Kedah and moves through Penang batch records, a European group's Vietnam and regional businesses and the sale that brought him to Lumaren. Impact carries four decisions with their costs. In the journal, each essay opens on a slate panel with a byline and standfirst, and the body is set in a reading serif with a sage drop capital.
The career page, A paper on my career scope, frames six appointments in ruled boxes numbered Appointment 1 to 6, each with employer size, ownership, reporting line and outcomes, from group chief executive back to quality assurance pharmacist. The readiness page, The board appointment paper, sets his contribution beside a committee matrix and his twenty-five available days, then pairs examples of his judgement, among them a warranty claim against sellers who stayed in the business, with his board exposure under Indonesia's two-tier system.
Why Graphite suits a regional pharmaceutical chief executive
Graphite lays warm off-white type on a charcoal ground, with slate panels and a pale sage accent reserved for rules, labels, numerals and links. Adrian's readers are investor directors, nominating-committee chairs in Singapore and Kuala Lumpur, health-ministry procurement officials and the next generation of a founding family. None wants a glossy brochure; a dark, quiet page reads like a document opened for work, and one cool accent keeps attention on the argument.
The composition loads two typefaces. Source Serif 4 sets his name, headlines, the abstract, large figures and essay text. IBM Plex Mono carries running text, labels and navigation, so S$ figures, dates and appointment numbers sit in even columns, much as they would in a tender schedule.
Who else the design suits
Graphite Policy Brief suits leaders whose standing depends on a reasoned case put to officials, investors or boards: a medical-device distributor's chief executive arguing about public procurement, a hospital group's strategy head writing on payer reform, a diagnostics company's regulatory director, or a family-business successor setting out how ownership should evolve. It works best when the lead essay recommends something a reader could reject. As with every design in the collection, it serves all ten leadership roles.
Questions about this design
- Why does Adrian Lim's home page lead with a paper title instead of his name?
- The composition treats the lead essay as the paper being presented. Its title becomes the headline and the name sits in the author block above it. Without an essay, the panel shows the leader's headline and philosophy instead.
- Can figures in different currencies sit together in the figures band?
- Yes. The band holds up to six measures, each with a label and a line of context. For a regional business, name the currency and year in each one, as Adrian's S$812m revenue for 2025 does.
- Will the dark palette print legibly?
- Yes. The print stylesheet switches every page to black type on white and hides navigation, so the career and board appointment papers print as clean documents for a committee pack.
- Can I see this design with an Indian leader's story?
- Yes. After picking a designation and an industry, switch the market control to India. Where an Indian story for that combination is still being written, the page says so plainly and shows the global version; resetting returns you to Adrian Lim.
