Cypress Field Notes: dispatches from the cities where the work happens
Cypress Field Notes pairs the Cypress palette with the Signature collection's Field Notes composition, which presents a leader as a correspondent filing reports from particular places. Its default leader is Aparna Desai, a fictional doctor-turned-strategist at a listed hospital and diagnostics group based in Nagpur. Her subject is how hospitals grow into India's smaller cities, which suits a layout built on datelines and places.
A home page that opens on the latest dispatch
Below the masthead, a full-width heading rule carries the words Field notes and the leader's name in the display face on the left, with her designation and India in small wheat-coloured type on the right. The main band then splits roughly two to one. The wider column is an essay cover: an eyebrow reading Dispatch 01 / India, the topic, date and reading time, the lead essay's title set very large as the page headline, its standfirst, and a link to read the dispatch.
For Aparna, that headline is her argument that tier-2 hospitals are built on doctors, not beds. A visitor meets the claim before the credentials, which is the right order for a strategist whose value lies in judgement. Below the cover, the two remaining essays appear as a numbered further-reading list, followed by her leadership conviction as a quotation and three headline measures, including the 21 months her focused hospitals took to break even.
The portrait as a caption, not a hero
The narrower column is the field map. Separated by a fine vertical rule, it holds the portrait at a modest height and, beneath it, a caption in small type: her name, her market, her languages, what she is open to and a contact link. On a phone the column becomes a single row, with a small portrait beside the caption, so the essay title still leads the screen.
This restraint matters in healthcare, where readers are wary of a leader who appears larger than the institution. A sideways-scrolling rail of career chapters appears when a member supplies short summaries. Aparna's record lives on the Career page instead, so her home moves on to her thesis, four proof points, current focus, an endorsement from her Risk Management Committee chair and a closing invitation.
Cypress: forest green, cream and wheat
The palette sets cream text on a deep forest-green ground, with sage for secondary text, a lighter green for shaded panels and a wheat-gold accent for eyebrows, dates and links. It reads as calm and unhurried, closer to a well-run ward at night than to a trading floor. Instrument Serif, a narrow display serif, carries the headlines and gives the large essay titles an editorial voice; Sora, a clean geometric sans-serif, sets the body and the small captions.
That combination suits an audience of hospital founders, nomination committee chairs and investors in healthcare. The green ground keeps long essays comfortable rather than clinical.
Career and readiness pages laid out as reports from the field
On the Career page each appointment becomes a dispatch. A shaded box on the left holds the dates and the employer's geography, from a 450-bed charitable hospital in Pune to twelve hospitals across Maharashtra, Chhattisgarh and Madhya Pradesh. The right column carries the title, reporting line, team, scope, outcomes and a narrative for each of her six roles. A search partner can follow her from operations through consulting and a pathology chain to the strategy chair, with every move explained.
The Board Readiness page opens with her contribution between two horizontal rules. Below, a shaded register lists the committees she would join and chair, her twenty-eight available days and her governance learning, beside her judgement examples, first-year approach and exposure.
Journal, impact and the rest of the site
The Journal index sets its title and standfirst across two columns, features the most recent essay, groups the archive by topic and ends with an author preface. Each essay page rules off its opening, renders the declared subheads as headings, draws a pull quote from the body and links to the previous and next dispatch. Aparna's three essays argue for recruiting specialists before building beds, pricing acquisitions on the referral book rather than occupancy, and designing a separate operating model for government-scheme patients.
The Impact page carries four decisions with their trade-offs: a declined ₹780 crore acquisition in Indore, focused hospitals in smaller cities, a diagnostics business kept against a ₹1,050 crore offer, and a trust hospital operated in Sagar.
Beyond healthcare, the design suits any leader whose work is rooted in places: an infrastructure developer, a regional banker, an agribusiness chief or a logistics executive opening new corridors.
Questions about this design
- Why does the home headline come from an essay rather than my name?
- Field Notes treats the leader as a correspondent, so the latest dispatch leads and the name sits in the heading rule and the portrait caption. Choose an essay title that states a claim you can defend, because it becomes the largest line on the site.
- Will the career rail appear on my home page?
- It appears when you add short career chapters. If you rely on the full career record alone, as this demonstration does, the home page moves from further reading straight to your conviction and measures.
- Is the dark green palette readable for long essays?
- Yes. Cream body text on deep green keeps strong contrast, and Sora is set at a comfortable size with generous line spacing. Printed pages switch to black on white.
- Can I see this design with a leader from another sector?
- Yes. The designation, industry and market controls show another leader's story in this layout, and a reset returns to Aparna Desai.
