Advantage / Graphite / The Profile

A field engineer's face beside the path of every report

Graphite / The Profile begins with a photograph and a sentence, then asks the reader to test both against evidence. Its demonstration leader is Harriet Montgomery, a fictional chief technology officer at Corrowyn Imaging, a Perth group owned by its radiologist partners with a minority healthcare investor. Her argument is that imaging technology should be judged where a referring doctor opens the report, not where the scanner acquires the image. The seven Advantage pages follow that argument from a Pilbara hospital in 1999 to a proposed first non-executive seat.

The cover sets her claim beside her photograph

On a desktop screen the home page splits into a text column and a large portrait. A small eyebrow names her designation and Australia. The headline is authored rather than her name: "Measured where the referring doctor reads the report". Beneath it runs her one-sentence standard, that an imaging service is finished only when the requesting doctor can find, trust and act on the report, then an open-to line limited to board work and a conversation link. On a phone the photograph drops beneath the text, so the claim is read before the face.

Why charcoal and sage suit a clinical-systems leader

Graphite sets warm off-white text on a deep charcoal ground with a faint green cast, using lighter slate panels and a pale sage accent for labels, rules and links. For Harriet's readers, health-provider chairs, audit committee members and search advisers, the effect is calm and private, closer to a reporting room with the lights lowered than to a hospital brochure. The code loads Libre Baskerville for the headline, section titles and large figures, and Figtree for navigation, captions and long reading. The serif gives a breach account measured authority; the sans-serif keeps A$ figures and percentages crisp at caption size.

Three figures, a conviction and the first decision

Below the cover come three measures, each captioned to separate the group's scale from her remit: A$231 million of FY2025 revenue, 1.15 million examinations a year and 93 per cent of reports now delivered into practice software. A band headed 'A considered point of view' sets her philosophy as a large quotation, ending with the line that the radiologist owns the report and she owns the path it travels. A panel of selected leadership work then introduces her first case, the retirement of fax for routine reports, and links to the Impact page. Her thesis, introduction and proof points follow, then boardroom and formation columns, a radiologist partner's quotation and a closing invitation.

Inner pages that keep a face in view

The Profile page places her biography beside a second, taller portrait captioned with her name, running from a Saturday repair at a Pilbara hospital to the CTO role created after the investor arrived. Her conviction, measures, hospice directorship and three colleague perspectives follow, including a Geraldton GP who opposed losing the fax. Expertise numbers five practices, from results delivery to AI used under radiologist oversight. Impact repeats the measures above three numbered decisions. Contact pairs her request for organisation, ownership, committee and calendar with a smaller portrait, and sends vendors, referrers and patients to the clinics instead.

A dated rail and a board panel for the record pages

Career gives each of six appointments a narrow left rail holding dates and geography, from Perth hospitals to Karratha and back, beside a wider column for ownership, scale, reporting line, team, budget, outcomes and the reason for moving. The rail makes a thirty-year arc easy to scan, from graduate engineer to a function of 68 employees and 15 contractors. Board Readiness uses a broad main column for her contribution, judgement examples, first year, conflicts and independence statement. A raised side panel holds the committees she would join, twenty-four days a year and her governance study. Her exposure closes the page, labelled honestly as reporting, presenting and one unpaid directorship.

Leaders who would wear this design well

The Profile composition suits an executive whose face and opening sentence should begin the relationship and whose record can survive careful reading afterwards. In Graphite it favours fields where discretion helps: technology and information chiefs, privacy and risk leaders, general counsel and finance heads in healthcare, aged care, insurance or professional services. It is less natural for a consumer brand leader who needs colour and product imagery. Any of the ten designations can use it, provided the portrait is calm, evenly lit and cropped to work beside the text and stacked beneath it.

Questions about this design

Will a dark portrait disappear against the Graphite background?
It can. A navy or black suit photographed against a dark wall may merge with the charcoal page. Choose a lighter or neutral background with visible shoulders, since the cover shows the image large on a desktop and full width on a phone.
Should a health-technology executive describe a data breach on a public website?
Only where it has already been disclosed as required and your employer agrees. Harriet's portal case gives the response, the regulator notification and her own deferred control at board-paper level, without naming patients, referrers or vendors. Directors weigh how a leader handled an incident more heavily than a claim that none occurred.
How specific should regulatory references be for an Australian healthcare leader?
Name a law or regulator only where you are sure of its role, and describe the practice rather than quoting clauses. Harriet mentions the Privacy Act, the notifiable data breaches scheme, My Health Record and the therapeutic goods register in general terms, which is enough for a board reader.
Can I keep this design if I have never served on a board?
Yes. The Readiness page suits honest first-seat candidates. Harriet's only directorship is an unpaid not-for-profit role, and her other exposure is labelled as reporting and presenting. State your own position as precisely, and the side panel will carry your committees, available days and directorship count.
