The problem this seat exists to solve

The director will oversee risk in agricultural finance delivered through technology-enabled processes. The mandate requires scrutiny of the connection between data quality, credit decisions, transaction evidence and collections.

Board responsibilities

Review credit appetite, approval authority and the governance of automated or model-supported decisions. Examine whether data used in underwriting remains reliable when borrowers, intermediaries or market conditions change. Ask how exceptions, overrides and performance deterioration are identified and brought to independent review.

Model and policy reporting should allow the board to see how approvals and repayment outcomes differ by transaction type, data source and exception route. Strong aggregate performance can conceal a weak segment growing rapidly. The director should ask how management detects changes in data reliability or borrower behaviour and when independent review is required. Where third-party data drives a decision, examine the organisation’s ability to understand errors, correct them and continue operating if the source becomes unavailable or changes its methodology.

Growth and control capacity

Challenge expansion plans against the ability to verify transactions, monitor exposures and manage delinquency. Assess concentration that may be hidden by a large number of nominal borrowers sharing the same buyer, supply chain or funding source. Require management to distinguish improved access from uncontrolled risk accumulation.

Qualified candidates

Candidates should bring credit-risk leadership with experience in agricultural finance, supply-chain lending or technology-enabled underwriting. They need sufficient data and model literacy to challenge claims without assuming that technical sophistication proves sound credit judgement. Governance experience and an understanding of operational fraud risks are important.

Evidence for the board

Useful reporting should connect approvals, repayment performance, overrides and losses to the underlying decision process. Candidates should explain a situation where a lending model performed well in aggregate but failed for a particular exposure group. The director provides oversight; management owns model operation, underwriting and collections under the approved framework.
