Commodity credit and warehousing organisation in Singapore

The problem this seat exists to solve

A trade finance enterprise seeks a director who can challenge the relationship between commodity-backed assets and the funding that supports them. The appointment carries full board responsibilities and a particular contribution to funding strategy, liquidity oversight and credit appetite. The director will not arrange facilities personally or operate the treasury function.

Match the asset promise to the funding promise

Short contractual maturities do not always produce short cash-conversion cycles. Stock disputes, delayed sales or borrower refinancing can extend exposures beyond their expected repayment dates. The director will examine whether funding plans recognise those possibilities and whether management understands the implications of lender concentration and restrictive covenants.

Decisions for the board

The appointee will assess proposals to diversify funding sources, alter portfolio mix or introduce new financing structures. They should interrogate the tradeoff between lower funding cost and reduced flexibility, including collateral eligibility, reporting requirements and termination rights. Board discussion must connect facility terms to the operating effort needed to comply with them.

Liquidity scenarios should consider simultaneous pressure on asset collections and funding availability. The director will challenge assumptions about selling or refinancing exposures during stress and ask whether the enterprise has credible contingency actions. They will seek clear visibility of encumbered assets and the consequences of competing security arrangements.

Management remains responsible for lender relationships, cash management and transaction execution. Material funding commitments, changes to appetite and other reserved matters follow formal board approval. The director should support timely decisions without informally granting approvals through bilateral conversations with executives.

Required perspective

Candidates need senior experience in commodity finance, structured trade lending or funding businesses with substantial collateral dependence. They should understand both the credit characteristics of underlying transactions and the constraints imposed by financiers. Evidence of navigating a funding disruption or revising a growth plan because liquidity assumptions were weak would be relevant.

The board requires financial fluency, independence and the ability to explain interconnected risks without excessive technical language. Prior governance experience is helpful, as is familiarity with the distinction between accounting profit, available liquidity and realisable collateral value.

Effective contribution will produce funding decisions with explicit downside consequences and a growth strategy that remains compatible with the balance sheet. The director should help ensure that strong origination does not obscure an increasing dependence on fragile refinancing assumptions or a small number of financing counterparties.
