The problem this seat exists to solve

This director will provide independent scrutiny of material remediation programmes and the investment needed to strengthen banking controls. The board requires a clear account of whether corrective work addresses underlying causes, whether delivery plans are credible and whether residual risks are understood while improvements are under way.

The diagnosis must justify the programme

Examine the diagnosis behind remediation plans and the connection between individual actions and the intended control outcome. Ask whether dependencies, staffing, data and technology requirements are realistically reflected in delivery dates. Challenge repeated extensions that lack a changed plan or a clear explanation of consequence.

Who can challenge a remediation plan

Applicants should have senior banking risk, audit, operations or transformation experience, including substantial responsibility for control improvement. They need to understand how organisational incentives and resource constraints can undermine well-designed remediation. Experience of challenging premature closure or resetting an unrealistic programme is valuable.

Candidates must be able to engage at detail level while keeping the board focused on material decisions. Strong financial literacy, independence and disciplined follow-through are essential.

Define closure through operating evidence

Review the basis for declaring work complete. Distinguish implementation evidence from evidence that a control operates effectively over time. Assess the independence and capacity of assurance functions asked to validate closure, especially where they face pressure to support programme milestones.

Allocate scarce control capacity

The director should help the board prioritise investment across competing weaknesses without allowing the loudest issue to consume all available capacity. Reporting must make visible the risk remaining during transition and the temporary protections that management relies upon.

Board oversight during and after delivery

The appointment is a board seat with wider governance responsibilities. The director will not run the programme office, but will challenge management's priorities, evidence and accountability when control weaknesses require sustained executive attention.

The board should have a trustworthy view of progress, a defensible basis for priorities and clear ownership of residual risk. The director will follow significant issues through collective governance processes. Appointment-specific eligibility, independence and approvals apply. Management retains responsibility for delivery and controls. Success is sustained improvement that can be evidenced after programme closure, not simply a reduction in the number of open actions or a favourable status colour in a report.
