The problem this seat exists to solve

The interim CRO will establish control over commitments that can undermine an industrial recovery. The brief extends beyond cash forecasting to the decisions that create future obligations: purchasing, capital expenditure, customer terms, guarantees and operating exceptions.

Own cash risk before commitments become fixed

Lead a practical framework for commitment approval and risk reporting. Work with operational managers to distinguish essential expenditure from discretionary activity and to identify the consequence of delay. Establish clear decision rights and ensure the framework can operate at the pace required by the business.

Identify and test the control gaps

Map where commitments originate and how they become visible to finance. Identify obligations absent from the cash forecast because they sit in purchase orders, contracts or local decisions. Examine whether approval limits reflect current liquidity and whether exceptions are consistently escalated.

Trace a proposed emergency purchase, a customer concession and a project variation through the decision process. Determine whether the approver sees the total exposure and whether related decisions are assessed together. A series of individually permissible commitments must not bypass the intended limit through fragmentation.

Qualified candidates

Candidates should have held senior risk, finance or restructuring responsibility in an operating industrial business. They need practical cash and contract literacy, the ability to challenge commercial decisions and experience introducing controls that managers can actually use. A purely policy-focused background will not meet the executive remit.

Measures and handover

Track forecast surprises caused by previously invisible commitments, repeated exceptions and the timeliness of risk escalation. Do not measure success only by the number of approvals refused; inappropriate restraint can damage the recovery as surely as uncontrolled spending.

The role should leave an accountable framework, reliable information and a clear transition from temporary recovery controls to normal management. The CRO coordinates risk decisions within delegated authority, while material legal interpretations and board approvals remain with the appropriate specialists and governing body.

Before you apply — this is an executive role

An interim seat needs work authorisation. A board seat in the Netherlands usually does not.

This is the single most common way a cross-border interim engagement falls apart after it has been agreed. The visa-free position that applies to a non-executive director attending board meetings does not extend to an executive or operating role.

Position in the Netherlands
A non-executive or supervisory director attending meetings does not require a residence permit. Executive roles for non-EU nationals require a permit, commonly under the highly skilled migrant scheme.
