The problem this seat exists to solve

The interim managing director will lead an operating business through a period requiring renewed management continuity. The assignment is to maintain customer and financial responsibilities while rebuilding a clear leadership system. It must avoid making the interim appointment another short-lived source of direction that leaves contradictory expectations behind.

Business continuity through a leadership gap

Establish the governing body's priorities, delegated authority and expectations for the permanent leadership appointment. Review commitments made under previous plans and determine which remain valid. Identify decisions that have been deferred because managers were uncertain whose direction would endure.

Prepare a usable organisation for the next leader

Work with the authorised governing body on the operating requirements of the permanent role. Do not predetermine the appointment or exceed the agreed remit. Develop a handover that includes the rationale for major decisions, unresolved issues and the management team's capabilities.

Success means the business operates coherently during transition and the successor receives a usable organisation rather than a list of unfinished initiatives. The interim director should leave dependable information, explicit accountabilities and realistic commitments. Performance improvement matters, but so does the quality of the leadership handover: the organisation must understand what continues, what remains open and how future decisions will be made once temporary authority ends.

Run the enterprise while the transition proceeds

Lead the management team, maintain a credible forecast and address consequential customer, people and operating issues. Reduce competing priorities to a manageable plan. Make clear which decisions are temporary arrangements and which establish a durable direction approved by the governing body.

Assess leadership capability through actual responsibilities and outcomes. Provide managers with clear expectations, support and appropriate challenge. Where changes are necessary, use the proper processes and ensure that essential knowledge is retained. Communicate decisions in a way that reduces speculation and makes ordinary work easier to perform.

Evidence from comparable executive transitions

Applicants should demonstrate general-management experience through leadership transition or comparable organisational uncertainty. They must explain how they built confidence without making unrealistic promises or becoming indispensable. Direct responsibility for financial performance, people and customer outcomes is required.

Before you apply — this is an executive role

An interim seat needs work authorisation. A board seat in the Netherlands usually does not.

This is the single most common way a cross-border interim engagement falls apart after it has been agreed. The visa-free position that applies to a non-executive director attending board meetings does not extend to an executive or operating role.

Position in the Netherlands
A non-executive or supervisory director attending meetings does not require a residence permit. Executive roles for non-EU nationals require a permit, commonly under the highly skilled migrant scheme.
