The programme lead will deliver automation across engineering build, test and deployment processes. The aim is to improve repeatability and reduce avoidable manual effort while preserving the decisions and evidence that make the process trustworthy. This role requires practical implementation leadership rather than an automation strategy that remains separate from daily delivery.

Automate the control, not just the manual step

Map current workflows and identify the purpose of each manual control. Determine which steps can be automated directly, which need redesign and which still require accountable human judgement. Review failure modes and exception handling before replacing a process that experienced staff currently keep working through informal knowledge.

Experience delivering sustainable automation

Candidates need engineering platform or DevOps leadership experience with successful automation delivery in controlled settings. They should understand testing, deployment and operational support, and be able to challenge poorly defined requirements. Evidence of sustaining automation after initial rollout is especially relevant.

Implement and prove the new path

Lead the automation backlog, coordinate platform and engineering teams and establish acceptance criteria. Ensure scripts and pipelines are maintained as controlled assets with clear ownership. Automated failure should be visible and recoverable, rather than silently allowing incomplete or incorrect work to continue.

Measure evidence quality alongside speed

Measure the effect on delivery lead time, rework and control evidence. Faster execution is not sufficient if teams lose the ability to understand why a change passed or who approved an exception. Provide training and support so that the new process does not create a different key-person dependency around a small automation team.

The lead will control the agreed programme backlog and implementation coordination, with material platform changes and risk decisions subject to established approval. The engagement should leave maintained pipelines, documented exception routes and permanent owners capable of extending the approach. Handover must distinguish fully automated controls from steps that remain manual or require further design. The role is accountable for adoption and operating effectiveness, not simply the number of scripts created. Candidates should be prepared to explain where they would deliberately retain a human decision because automation would obscure rather than improve accountability.
