The problem this seat exists to solve
The director will join a retail board and contribute expertise in supply resilience, supplier relationships and continuity of essential operations. The remit is to challenge whether management understands the dependencies supporting availability and can respond proportionately when they fail. It carries full collective governance responsibility rather than an executive procurement mandate.
What the board needs to understand
Examine concentration in suppliers, logistics providers, distribution assets and critical information systems. Ask where alternatives exist in practice and where apparent options would take too long to activate. Review management's treatment of seasonal demand, product substitution and capacity constraints during disruption.
Challenge the balance between efficiency and resilience. Lower inventory or more concentrated sourcing may improve ordinary economics while increasing exposure to interruption. Conversely, expensive redundancy may offer little protection if alternatives share the same underlying dependency. The director should help the board assess these choices through credible scenarios and operational evidence.
Governance responsibilities
Contribute to risk appetite, capital decisions and oversight of management preparedness. Seek assurance that continuity plans have been exercised and that lessons affect operating choices. Examine the treatment of supplier distress and the consequences of the retailer's own commercial practices for supply reliability. Relevant specialists should inform legal and product-safety questions.
The director will not manage incidents, select suppliers or negotiate terms. During disruption, the board's role is to oversee management's response, ensure appropriate decisions are taken and maintain attention to enterprise consequences. Any committee assignment will reflect the actual entity's requirements and the director's independence.
**Experience needed at the board table.**
Candidates should bring senior retail, supply-chain or consumer-goods leadership with experience of significant operational disruption. They must demonstrate judgement about resilience investment and the ability to challenge reassuring but untested plans. Applications should include a case where the most efficient normal-state arrangement proved unsuitable under stress.
Governing the choices under disruption
The board should gain clearer visibility of critical dependencies and more defensible choices about mitigation. Success is not the promise that disruption will never occur. It is an enterprise whose leaders understand what can fail, what customer commitments can be protected and when they must change course as conditions develop.
