Deep technology and semiconductors organisation in Netherlands
The problem this seat exists to solve
The director will bring independent technology judgement to major architecture and platform decisions with security implications. The remit concerns strategic commitments that affect product flexibility, resilience and future investment. It requires technical depth translated into board-level choices, rather than direct participation in design reviews for ordinary engineering work.
Make the consequences visible
Challenge proposals for platform change, proprietary components or dependence on external technology. Ask which business capability the decision enables, what alternatives exist and what obligations it creates. Management should explain the cost of reversal and the conditions under which the preferred design would cease to be appropriate.
Review security assumptions alongside performance, economics and supportability. A design can reduce one exposure while creating another, such as dependence on a difficult-to-update component or a scarce specialist team. The board needs a balanced account rather than a claim that an architecture is inherently secure in every context.
Required background
Candidates should have senior engineering, architecture or board experience in cybersecurity or deep-technology products. They need evidence of strategic technical decisions and responsibility for their downstream consequences. The ability to explain uncertainty and seek specialist input beyond their own expertise is essential.
Oversight after commitment
Monitor whether the expected benefits emerge and whether implementation reveals new constraints. Support staged investment where useful and require management to identify decision points before commitments become difficult to reverse. The director should challenge both unnecessary architectural complexity and short-term expedients that create disproportionate future obligations.
This is a director appointment with collective responsibility. The individual will not become chief architect, approve code or manage engineering teams. Any committee responsibilities will be agreed for the seat.
Effective contribution means clearer technical investment papers, explicit trade-offs and a board able to distinguish material architecture risk from routine engineering choice. Candidates must disclose interests in vendors, patents, competing technologies and advisory engagements. They should demonstrate the maturity to support management's execution after a properly reached decision while continuing to monitor the assumptions on which the board relied.
