Deep technology and semiconductors organisation in Netherlands
The problem this seat exists to solve
Candidates should bring senior leadership or board experience in semiconductors, embedded technology or a closely related deep-technology business. The board needs someone who understands qualification cycles, design commitments and the economic consequences of product choices. Technical credibility must be accompanied by commercial judgement and the ability to operate through collective governance.
Scrutinise the route to adoption
The director will examine market-entry plans, customer qualification and the capabilities required to support adoption. Challenge assumptions about design wins, conversion to revenue and the time needed for customers to integrate a component or platform. A promising evaluation should not be treated as a committed production programme without evidence.
Review concentration in target customers, manufacturing arrangements and critical technical partners. Ask how the business would respond if a dependency changed, a qualification was delayed or a product required redesign. Management should explain both the financial exposure and the effect on engineering capacity.
Capital choices through the product cycle
Assess investment in development, tooling, testing and support against the proposed market opportunity. Require clarity on irreversible commitments and the evidence needed before they are made. The director should help the board compare alternative paths without assuming that the most technically ambitious option is always the best commercial choice.
Monitor outcomes against the original product and market logic. Where conditions change, support a disciplined decision about continuing, narrowing or redirecting investment. The board should understand the cost of abandoning work as well as the cost of persisting with it.
The boundaries of the seat
This is a director appointment, not a technical advisory contract or a sales-channel role. Executives remain accountable for product development, customer negotiation and partner management. Committee responsibilities will be agreed at appointment.
The desired contribution is more realistic commercial planning, explicit investment conditions and better oversight of technical dependencies. Candidates must disclose relationships with manufacturers, customers, investors and competing technologies. They should demonstrate independence of thought and a willingness to remain engaged with the consequences of decisions after the initial approval has been given.
