Agricultural commodities organisation in Netherlands

The problem this seat exists to solve

The director will contribute independent oversight of investment in agricultural processing capacity. The board needs to assess more than engineering cost and nominal output: raw-material availability, product demand, logistics, working capital and operating capability all determine whether capacity creates value. This seat is for a director who can connect those dependencies and challenge optimistic assumptions constructively.

Judge expansion through the whole value chain

Review investment proposals for consistency between supply, production and sales forecasts. Ask how input quality and seasonal availability affect utilisation and yield. Examine the proposed route to market, including whether customers have validated specifications and whether the commercial plan depends on displacing established supply without a clear advantage.

Commissioning is part of the investment case

Scrutinise project phasing, contingency and readiness of the operating team. A completed facility is not necessarily a commissioned, stable or commercially accepted operation. Require management to define the evidence needed at each stage before further commitments are made, and the response if commissioning or customer qualification takes longer than expected.

Candidate investment judgement

Candidates should bring board or senior executive experience in agricultural processing, food ingredients, industrial investment or a closely related field. They need practical understanding of capital projects and operating economics, with the ability to interrogate financial models and technical assumptions. A record of investment decisions followed through into operating performance is particularly important.

Review the realised operating outcome

After approval, monitor the original investment logic alongside changes in conditions. Challenge unexplained cost increases and revised capacity assumptions, but recognise when a controlled adjustment protects value better than adherence to an outdated plan. Review lessons from completed projects before the next expansion is proposed.

This is a director seat, not a project-management appointment. Management retains responsibility for project execution and specialist design decisions. The director acts through collective board decisions and any agreed committee remit. The desired contribution includes realistic approval conditions, clearer visibility of commissioning risk and capital allocation that recognises working-capital and capability needs. Potential interests in equipment suppliers, contractors, customers or financing providers must be disclosed before appointment and as they arise.
