The problem this seat exists to solve
The adviser will investigate working-capital pressure in manufacturing where customer-specific work, milestones and changes affect billing and collection. The assignment requires understanding the commercial and production process behind the balance sheet.
Follow the order to the cash release
Review deposits, purchasing, work in progress, delivery acceptance, change requests and invoices. Identify work that has consumed cash without reaching a billable or collectible stage. Distinguish a production constraint from a contractual dispute or an administrative failure.
For each proposed release, identify the operational step, customer decision or evidence required. Avoid counting the same improvement as both inventory reduction and accelerated billing. Show the cost of discounts, rework or additional resources needed to obtain cash, and distinguish temporary actions from changes that improve future orders.
Advice to management
Recommend actions that release cash without creating unmanageable delivery risk. Clarify ownership of incomplete documentation, disputed variations and overdue acceptance. Examine whether payment terms align with the cost profile of the work and whether new orders recreate the same funding burden.
For a contested milestone, assemble the delivery record and customer correspondence before assigning a collection date. Finance should not build a liquidity commitment around an invoice that the commercial team cannot yet substantiate.
Qualified candidates
Candidates should have working-capital, project-finance or manufacturing improvement experience. They need to interpret commercial terms and production evidence as well as financial records. Experience resolving billing or acceptance problems through cross-functional work is especially relevant.
Deliverables and sustainable practice
Provide a validated opportunity register, prioritised interventions and a process for monitoring new exposures. Measures should reveal recurring causes, including unapproved work and delayed acceptance, rather than celebrate a one-time reduction in aged balances.
The adviser supplies analysis and implementation support within an agreed scope. Management retains authority over customer negotiations and operating commitments, with legal interpretations referred to the appropriate specialists. The engagement should leave the business able to prevent cash from becoming trapped again, not only to recover selected historic amounts.

Before you apply — an advisory engagement
No office of director, and no appointment formalities.
An advisory engagement creates no directorship in Italy. There is no registry filing, no regulator pre-approval, no residency arithmetic and no statutory director liability — which is why it is so often the right first step into a market you do not yet know.
- On this brief
- Independence
- Where the engagement specifies independence from any search that follows, that is a requirement of the engagement rather than a courtesy — an adviser to a board is not a candidate for it.
