Retail organisation in Italy
The problem this seat exists to solve
The advisor will support the development of a private-label portfolio that strengthens the retailer's proposition and has credible commercial and operational foundations. The engagement covers category roles, product tiers, quality expectations and the decisions needed before new ranges are introduced. It is not a product-sourcing agency appointment or a mandate to negotiate with suppliers.
Examine the customer and category logic
Assess where private label can improve value, differentiation or category coherence. Review customer expectations, existing brand relationships, price gaps and the evidence from comparable products already sold. Distinguish opportunities that solve a customer need from additions that merely expand the assortment.
Work with commercial and technical teams to understand development capability, supplier concentration, testing, packaging and replenishment requirements. Identify dependencies that would make an apparently attractive launch difficult to sustain. Quality and product-safety responsibilities must be explicit and supported by appropriately qualified specialists.
Recommendations to make
Propose a prioritised development portfolio with clear roles for entry, core and differentiated offers where those tiers are justified. Explain the intended relationship with branded products and the effect on shelf space, margin and customer choice. Advise on stage gates that require evidence of quality, supply readiness and commercial demand before expansion.
Develop a test approach that considers repeat purchase, customer feedback, contribution and operational reliability. Identify circumstances in which a launch should be altered or stopped. The advisor should make uncertainty visible rather than imply that category forecasts can remove the risk of a new offer.
Development expertise within a defined advisory scope
Applicants should demonstrate private-label or category-development experience with responsibility for commercial outcomes and cross-functional execution. They should discuss a launch where quality or supply considerations changed the commercial plan. Strong candidates can balance customer value with supplier capability and the retailer's capacity to maintain the range.
Management retains product approval, sourcing authority and responsibility for compliance. The final output should enable a sequenced investment decision, with named internal owners and measurable review points. Success is a portfolio customers can understand and the business can deliver consistently, supported by a disciplined route for learning rather than a large launch calendar without sufficient capability.

Before you apply — an advisory engagement
No office of director, and no appointment formalities.
An advisory engagement creates no directorship in Italy. There is no registry filing, no regulator pre-approval, no residency arithmetic and no statutory director liability — which is why it is so often the right first step into a market you do not yet know.
- On this brief
- Independence
- Where the engagement specifies independence from any search that follows, that is a requirement of the engagement rather than a courtesy — an adviser to a board is not a candidate for it.
