Retail and franchise networks organisation in Italy

The problem this seat exists to solve

The interim retail director will lead the store organisation and improve the way regional leaders support, challenge and coordinate site managers. The assignment requires operating accountability, with particular attention to recurring issues that remain unresolved because central, regional and local responsibilities overlap.

Make regional management useful to the stores

Candidates should have led a substantial multi-site retail operation and developed managers responsible for varied locations. They need evidence of improving performance through leadership and working practices, not simply increasing inspection frequency. Financial literacy and practical understanding of customer-facing operations are required.

Diagnose the management burden

Review what store managers are expected to deliver, the decisions they can make and the information available to them. Examine regional visits, reporting demands and escalation patterns. Identify where management activity consumes time without improving decisions or customer outcomes.

Clarify the regional role in coaching, performance intervention and resolution of central dependencies. Establish consistent expectations while allowing proportionate attention to locations with different needs. Strong sites should not receive unnecessary oversight simply because a uniform schedule is easier to administer.

Lead through actual operating problems

Use priority issues such as availability, service consistency and staffing to establish better accountability. Resolve matters that stores cannot address locally and require site managers to act where they have authority. Challenge repeated escalation of routine decisions and repeated central requests that conflict with agreed priorities.

The director will assess leadership capability and recommend or implement changes within delegation. Employment and structural decisions requiring additional approval must follow the appropriate process.

Leave managers able to manage

The handover should include clear responsibilities, a practical performance cadence and development priorities for regional and store leaders. Applicants should be able to explain how they reduced dependency on their personal intervention in a previous network role. Success is visible in faster resolution of operating issues, more credible commitments and consistent customer delivery. The result should not be an additional reporting layer or a network that performs only when senior leaders are physically present to direct every decision.

Before you apply — this is an executive role

An interim seat needs work authorisation. A board seat in Italy usually does not.

This is the single most common way a cross-border interim engagement falls apart after it has been agreed. The visa-free position that applies to a non-executive director attending board meetings does not extend to an executive or operating role.

Position in Italy
A non-executive director attending board meetings does not require a permit. Executive roles for non-EU nationals do, and are subject to the immigration decree quotas.
