Retail and franchise networks organisation in Italy

The problem this seat exists to solve

This director will strengthen board oversight of service consistency across stores, dealers or franchise locations. The board needs evidence that operating standards are meaningful, achievable and reflected in customer experience, rather than comfort from inspection scores whose relationship to outcomes is unclear.

Know whether the network delivers what the brand promises

The role is a full directorship with collective responsibility for strategy, risk and performance. It is not a field-audit or network-management appointment.

Experience suited to independent challenge

Applicants should have senior multi-site operations leadership and an understanding of the economics and practical constraints of customer-facing locations. Experience designing or improving operating assurance is valuable where it led to better decisions and outcomes. Financial literacy and the ability to contribute beyond service matters are essential.

Candidates must be able to question both weak compliance and unrealistic central standards. They should explain how they distinguished a site-level failure from a problem in the operating model or support system.

Scrutinise the assurance chain

Review which standards matter most to customers and business resilience. Examine how evidence is gathered, whether sampling captures weak locations and how recurring deficiencies are escalated. Challenge incentives that encourage preparation for inspections rather than sustained performance.

Ask whether site managers have the resources and authority needed to meet expectations. Assess the quality of corrective actions and whether central causes are addressed. The board should see unresolved patterns, not only the percentage of locations passing a checklist.

Connect standards to strategic choices

Examine how expansion, cost reduction or channel changes affect service capability. Require management to make trade-offs explicit when the proposed model cannot support the existing promise. Follow material risks through collective governance processes.

Appointment-specific eligibility, independence and conflicts will be assessed. Management remains responsible for standards and operating interventions. Success is a board with credible evidence of network performance and the ability to challenge the causes of inconsistency. The director should help ensure that assurance reveals reality and supports improvement rather than becoming an administrative exercise that rewards good documentation while customers experience recurring failures.

Before you apply — Italy

No nationality or residency test applies to an Italian director. The route in that matters is procedural rather than legal: a place on a slate.

Residency test
None.
Nationality test
None.
Work authorisation
A non-executive director attending board meetings does not require a permit. Executive roles for non-EU nationals do, and are subject to the immigration decree quotas.
Tenure limit once appointed
No hard statutory cap. The 2020 Corporate Governance Code treats service exceeding nine years in the previous twelve as a circumstance that compromises independence, requiring the board to assess and disclose.
