The problem this seat exists to solve
The director will bring independent scrutiny to banking products distributed through digital channels and external interfaces. The board needs assurance that commercial growth, customer understanding and operational accountability remain aligned when the customer journey spans technology, product design and partner relationships.
Customer journeys and commercial claims
Examine the evidence behind digital growth assumptions, including acquisition cost, customer activity, service demand and sustainable economics. Challenge journeys that make purchase easy while making important terms, support or exit difficult to understand. Assess whether customers receive appropriate information at the point where decisions are actually made.
Accountability across the digital journey
Review accountability across product owners, technology teams and external distribution partners. Ask how errors, misleading presentation or service interruptions are detected and corrected. Ensure the board sees the consequences of automated decisions and the availability of meaningful human intervention where required by the product or applicable framework.
Capability to challenge digital growth
The seat is suited to a banking leader with experience in distribution, product governance or digital change. It requires curiosity about technology and strong judgement about customer consequences, while leaving channel management and delivery with executives.
Applicants should have substantial banking leadership experience in customer-facing businesses, product oversight, digital distribution or related risk functions. They need an understanding of banking economics and the operational reality of delivering through technology. Experience resolving problems across organisational boundaries is especially relevant.
Candidates must demonstrate the ability to question a compelling growth narrative with evidence and to recognise where specialist technical or legal advice is needed. Independent judgement and effective participation in collective governance are essential.
The full investment and the board's decision
The director should challenge investment cases that understate ongoing maintenance, fraud exposure, support demand or dependency on a single channel. Progress reporting must show the quality of adoption and customer outcomes, not only registrations or application volumes.
The director will support better decisions on digital strategy, product changes and material partnerships, following risks through to resolution. Appointment-specific eligibility, independence and approvals apply. The role does not authorise individual product launches or direct system changes. Success is a board that understands how the digital proposition works for customers and where commercial ambition depends on capabilities or controls that still require investment.
