Experience of the model's economics
Candidates should have held senior commercial or general-management responsibility in industrial technology, equipment services or enterprise solutions. Experience developing service-led business models is important, including examples where expected economics failed and the model had to change. Strong financial literacy and practical understanding of delivery operations are required.
Applicants must show the capacity for independent challenge, not merely enthusiasm for recurring revenue. Board experience is valuable where it demonstrates oversight of complex strategic change.
Before customers are promised outcomes
Review proposals for service bundles, performance-linked contracts and subscription offers against their actual cost and risk. Ask whether the organisation has the data, field capability and contractual rights needed to deliver. Challenge financial cases that assume service penetration without considering customer procurement cycles, incumbent maintenance arrangements or channel conflict.
Assess how the transition affects working capital, sales incentives, product design and accountability for customer outcomes. Examine whether service obligations outlast the availability of components or technology support. Ensure that the board can distinguish recurring revenue supported by durable value from revenue sustained by underpriced commitments.
Renewal, repricing and sustained board review
The director will also test exit and renewal economics. Long relationships require a disciplined approach to repricing, service scope and the treatment of customers whose operating needs change materially.
The director will contribute to collective strategy, scrutinise material investments and monitor the commercial and operational evidence behind progress claims. Appointment-specific eligibility and conflicts will be reviewed. Management remains responsible for designing offers, setting prices and delivering contracts. Success is a board that understands the obligations it is approving and can judge whether the service model is strengthening the business over time.
