The problem this seat exists to solve
The director will strengthen board oversight of environmental and service performance information. The remit is to assess whether measures, claims and management reports have clear definitions, accountable owners and a reliable evidence base. It is not an appointment to certify technical compliance or perform statutory assurance.
Examine the information chain
Review how significant performance data is collected, checked and consolidated. Ask where estimates are used, how changes in definitions are controlled and whether comparisons remain meaningful over time. The board should understand the limits of the information and the decisions it can reasonably support.
Challenge claims of improvement that may reflect a changed boundary, measurement method or operating mix. Management should distinguish those effects from genuine operational progress. Where third-party assurance is used, examine its scope and limitations rather than treating its existence as confirmation of every public statement.
Data and assurance experience
Candidates should bring senior environmental, data, audit, utility or board experience with direct exposure to performance reporting. They need the ability to question technical information and translate uncertainty into governance implications. Experience improving reporting integrity across operational teams is particularly relevant.
Use information to set priorities
Help the board connect measures to investment and service priorities. A large dashboard is not necessarily useful if it fails to identify where action is needed. Ask management to explain material variances and the response, and follow recurring information weaknesses through to evidence of remediation.
This is an independent director appointment with collective board responsibilities and any agreed committee remit. Executives retain data production, operational management and approval processes for external communications. Qualified assurance providers retain their professional responsibilities.
Expected contribution includes clearer performance narratives, proportionate assurance and fewer unsupported claims. Candidates must disclose relationships with reporting advisers, assurance providers or interested commercial parties. They should be willing to challenge positive results when the evidence is weak and to acknowledge valid improvement when the data supports it, avoiding both promotional certainty and an assumption that every limitation makes the information unusable for a carefully bounded decision.
