Water and environmental services organisation in Italy

The problem this seat exists to solve

Candidates should have senior environmental-services, industrial, infrastructure or board experience involving investment and operating economics. They need the ability to interrogate technical claims and financial models without assuming that expertise in one process applies automatically to all technologies. Experience with investment outcomes after commissioning is particularly important.

Assess the full chain of value and obligation

The director will strengthen board decisions concerning resource recovery and related environmental-service investment. The remit connects feedstock, processing capability, output markets and residual obligations. It requires independent judgement about projects whose economics can depend on several assumptions being true at the same time.

Feedstock, process and output assumptions

Challenge forecasts for input volume and composition, process performance and the value of outputs. Ask how variability affects capacity, cost and product acceptance. Management should explain the consequences if a planned outlet becomes unavailable or an output requires additional treatment or handling.

Commissioning and operating capability

Review project phasing, commissioning and operating capability. A facility's nominal capacity is not the same as sustained useful output. Require evidence for the expected ramp-up and a plan for managing material during interruptions or periods of lower performance.

Oversight after approval

Monitor performance against the original logic and require management to explain departures. Distinguish execution problems from incorrect assumptions about supply or markets. The board should consider changes in scope or strategy when evidence warrants them, rather than defend a project solely because significant capital has already been committed.

This is an independent director appointment with collective responsibility and any agreed investment or risk committee duties. Management retains technical design, operations and commercial execution. The role is not a statutory audit, inspection or separate supervisory appointment.

Expected contribution includes more realistic investment decisions, explicit contingency options and better visibility of lifecycle obligations. Candidates must disclose relationships with technology vendors, contractors, customers and financiers. The board will expect balanced judgement about innovation: promising recovery methods deserve consideration, but their environmental and commercial claims must be supported by evidence appropriate to the scale of commitment being proposed.

Before you apply — Italy

No nationality or residency test applies to an Italian director. The route in that matters is procedural rather than legal: a place on a slate.

Residency test
None.
Nationality test
None.
Work authorisation
A non-executive director attending board meetings does not require a permit. Executive roles for non-EU nationals do, and are subject to the immigration decree quotas.
Tenure limit once appointed
No hard statutory cap. The 2020 Corporate Governance Code treats service exceeding nine years in the previous twelve as a circumstance that compromises independence, requiring the board to assess and disclose.
