Retail organisation in France
The problem this seat exists to solve
The advisor will support an executive team in selecting and sequencing a retail recovery plan. The engagement concerns the relationship between immediate trading actions and the structural choices required for sustainable performance. It must identify a limited set of priorities that the organisation can execute, with clear recognition of cash, customer and workforce constraints.
Diagnose the business before selecting the programme
Review trading trends, category and store economics, cash commitments and customer evidence. Distinguish weaknesses in proposition from failures of execution and from changes in the market. Test whether reported improvement reflects durable progress or temporary measures such as delayed maintenance, reduced stock or unusually heavy promotions.
Consider options across pricing, assortment, operating cost, capital and organisational capability. Explain interactions: a range reduction may simplify work but weaken a shopping mission; a cost intervention may protect cash while undermining availability. Recommendations should include the consequences of doing too much at once.
Build the sequence
Develop an evidence-based recovery plan with early actions, decision gates and conditions for deeper intervention. Identify the management capacity and data required for each step. Propose measures that expose whether the plan is working, including leading indicators and adverse customer or operating effects.
The advisor will challenge assumptions and facilitate executive choices but will not assume line authority or make creditor, employee or supplier commitments. Financial restructuring, legal obligations and other specialist matters require qualified advice. Management and the governing body retain responsibility for approving and delivering the plan.
Selecting the advisor and using the recommendation
Candidates should have substantial retail turnaround or recovery experience and be able to discuss both successful and unsuccessful interventions. They must connect commercial judgement with cash and operating detail. Applications should explain how they changed course when the initial diagnosis proved incomplete.
Leadership should receive a coherent plan, explicit trade-offs and a practical method for reviewing progress. Success means the enterprise can distinguish urgent action from distracting activity and knows what evidence would justify continuing, accelerating or abandoning a measure. The recommendation must remain useful after the engagement ends, including when trading conditions differ from the original forecast.

Before you apply — an advisory engagement
No office of director, and no appointment formalities.
An advisory engagement creates no directorship in France. There is no registry filing, no regulator pre-approval, no residency arithmetic and no statutory director liability — which is why it is so often the right first step into a market you do not yet know.
- On this brief
- Independence
- Where the engagement specifies independence from any search that follows, that is a requirement of the engagement rather than a courtesy — an adviser to a board is not a candidate for it.
