The problem this seat exists to solve
The board seeks a director with substantial group-finance, audit or control experience and a practical understanding of hospitality operations. Candidates should be able to examine cash handling, purchasing, payroll and revenue processes without assuming that a policy issued centrally is operating consistently at every property. A relevant accounting qualification or equivalent professional depth is expected.
Oversight across locations
The director will scrutinise the quality of financial control and reporting across a hospitality group. Review how local responsibilities connect to group oversight, including the handling of exceptions and recurring reconciliation differences. Ask whether central adjustments conceal weaknesses that property managers have not been equipped to address.
Examine the reliability of operational data used in finance, such as occupancy, service usage, discounts and complimentary activity. The board should understand how these records connect to revenue and cost. Where manual processes remain, assess whether they are proportionate and controlled rather than assuming automation is always the immediate answer.
Assurance and management response
Help focus assurance work on areas with meaningful financial or conduct exposure. Review findings for patterns across locations, and require management to explain the resources and ownership behind remediation. Follow-up should establish that a control works in practice, not merely that staff have acknowledged a revised procedure.
Challenge proposals to centralise activities by considering both control benefits and the service burden on properties. A central team needs clear responsibilities, access to reliable information and realistic capacity if the change is to improve the system.
Board role and evidence of value
This appointment is to the board, with any committee responsibilities agreed at the outset. The director will not supervise local accountants or approve individual transactions. Executives remain accountable for operating controls and producing financial information.
The contribution should be visible in fewer persistent reporting exceptions, clearer ownership and assurance that reaches the actual operating processes. Candidates need the ability to maintain constructive challenge when management reports progress that is not yet supported by evidence. Potential conflicts involving property owners, operators, service suppliers and assurance providers must be disclosed and assessed in the context of the seat.

Before you apply — France
No nationality or residency test applies to a director of a French société anonyme. The constraint on a French board is its composition arithmetic, not your passport.
- Residency test
- None.
- Nationality test
- None.
- Work authorisation
- A non-executive director attending board meetings requires no work authorisation. An executive seat — directeur général or a directoire seat — held by a non-EU national raises residence-permit questions and should be checked before acceptance.
- Tenure limit once appointed
- Twelve years. Under the AFEP-MEDEF Code a director loses independent status on passing twelve years' service, and the board must state the position each year.
