Software engineering organisation in Germany
The problem this seat exists to solve
The adviser will evaluate opportunities to consolidate overlapping software platforms while preserving the capabilities customers actually use. The work must distinguish desirable standardisation from a migration whose cost and disruption outweigh the benefits. It should give leadership a clear set of choices, including the option to retain differences where the economics support them.
Expertise to compare platforms honestly
Candidates should have senior engineering or architecture experience with platform consolidation and a record of working alongside commercial and operational leaders. They need to evaluate both technical feasibility and the practical burden of migration. Experience with unsuccessful or revised consolidation programmes is valuable when it demonstrates clear learning and disciplined decision-making.
Cost, target architecture and migration choices
Map current products, shared components, integration points and customer-specific dependencies. Examine the cost of maintaining separate platforms, but also the cost of recreating functionality, migrating data, retraining users and supporting parallel operation. Review contractual and operational constraints that could affect the proposed transition, with specialist input where necessary.
Assess candidate target architectures against service needs, engineering capacity and expected product direction. Avoid choosing a platform solely because it is newer or belongs to the dominant team. Identify assumptions that need prototypes, performance testing or customer validation before a major commitment is made.
Develop migration options with explicit sequencing and stop points. Show what can be moved incrementally, what requires coordinated change and what should remain isolated until a dependency is resolved. Each option should include operational risk, support implications and the period during which duplicated cost will continue.
The recommendation and approval boundary
Deliver a platform comparison, recommended path and investment case that identifies material uncertainties. Include governance for scope changes and a proposed method of tracking realised benefits. The adviser has no authority to mandate architecture, terminate platforms or commit customers to migration. Those decisions remain with management. The engagement should leave the organisation able to explain why consolidation is justified, which customer outcomes must be protected and what evidence would cause the chosen approach to be reconsidered.

Before you apply — an advisory engagement
No office of director, and no appointment formalities.
An advisory engagement creates no directorship in Germany. There is no registry filing, no regulator pre-approval, no residency arithmetic and no statutory director liability — which is why it is so often the right first step into a market you do not yet know.
- On this brief
- Independence
- Where the engagement specifies independence from any search that follows, that is a requirement of the engagement rather than a courtesy — an adviser to a board is not a candidate for it.
