The problem this seat exists to solve
Applicants should demonstrate deep retail pricing or commercial leadership with evidence of implemented price strategies. They should explain a case where data suggested one response but customer or operational evidence led to another. Strong candidates understand category economics and can communicate trade-offs without concealing them inside a complex model.
Price decisions that customers understand
The advisor will assess a grocery retailer's price architecture and recommend how value can be communicated and delivered consistently. The engagement concerns the relationship between everyday prices, promotional activity, product tiers and customer perception. It must connect commercial analysis to the realities of store execution and supplier economics.
Investigate the current architecture
Examine price relationships within and between categories, including entry-level products, core lines and premium offers. Identify where frequent promotions obscure the normal proposition or where inconsistent price gaps make trade-up choices difficult to understand. Compare apparent margin gains with changes in volume, basket composition and customer retention.
Review how pricing decisions are made and updated. Assess data quality, competitive references, local discretion and the treatment of cost changes. Distinguish products that materially influence value perception from those where other attributes dominate. The analysis should avoid assuming that every customer or shopping mission responds to the same signals.
Recommendations and testing
Develop options for a clearer architecture, with commercial consequences and implementation requirements. Propose controlled tests that measure customer response, contribution and operational effects together. Advise on the role of promotions, including how to identify activity that shifts timing rather than generates worthwhile demand.
Recommendations must account for shelf communication, digital presentation and the ability of store teams to execute price changes accurately. The advisor will not set live prices or negotiate supplier terms. Management retains pricing authority and responsibility for compliance with applicable requirements; specialist advice should be sought where needed.
The decision package
Deliver a tested recommendation, clear assumptions and a practical governance approach for maintaining the architecture. Success means leadership can explain the value proposition to customers and the financial logic internally, while recognising when changing costs or competitive conditions require reconsideration. The output should enable better judgement rather than dependence on a permanent external pricing exercise.

Before you apply — an advisory engagement
No office of director, and no appointment formalities.
An advisory engagement creates no directorship in Germany. There is no registry filing, no regulator pre-approval, no residency arithmetic and no statutory director liability — which is why it is so often the right first step into a market you do not yet know.
- On this brief
- Independence
- Where the engagement specifies independence from any search that follows, that is a requirement of the engagement rather than a courtesy — an adviser to a board is not a candidate for it.
