Advisor on Expertise-Led Service Portfolio Design

Professional services organisation in Germany

The problem this seat exists to solve

Applicants should bring experience designing or managing an expertise-led service portfolio and following its commercial results. They must demonstrate how client evidence changed an initial proposition and how delivery economics affected the final choice. Strong candidates understand the cultural implications of retiring a service associated with an influential professional.

From a collection of offers to an intentional portfolio

The engagement will advise a professional-services leadership team on which services to develop, combine, maintain or retire. The central question is where the business can deliver differentiated value repeatedly, with appropriate economics and quality. The advisor must distinguish a compelling proposition from a collection of specialist capabilities that clients cannot readily understand or purchase.

Evidence to assemble

Review client needs, engagement outcomes, win and loss information, delivery effort and the cost of maintaining expertise. Examine services that generate revenue but depend on exceptional individual effort or expose the business to poorly controlled obligations. Investigate opportunities for repeatable delivery without assuming that all professional judgement can be standardised.

Compare the portfolio with available talent and management capacity. Identify services whose growth would require new supervision, technology or professional capabilities. Test whether adjacent offers serve a coherent customer problem or simply expand the catalogue. Use interviews and documented commercial evidence to separate internal enthusiasm from credible demand.

Recommendations that support decisions

Present service-level options with investment needs, economics, dependencies and reasons for withdrawal where appropriate. Advise on the balance between bespoke work and defined offerings, including how exceptions should be priced and approved. Develop a practical validation approach for proposed services before leadership commits substantial resources.

The advisor will facilitate portfolio decisions and provide independent challenge. Pricing authority, client acceptance and resource commitments remain with management. Specialist legal or professional requirements must be reviewed by the appropriate advisers before a new service enters the market.

The final decision package

The engagement should leave a coherent portfolio recommendation, explicit investment priorities and a manageable process for future additions. Success means leadership can explain whom each service helps, why the business is qualified to deliver it and what evidence will determine whether continued investment is justified. A larger catalogue is not itself a successful outcome.

Before you apply — an advisory engagement

No office of director, and no appointment formalities.

An advisory engagement creates no directorship in Germany. There is no registry filing, no regulator pre-approval, no residency arithmetic and no statutory director liability — which is why it is so often the right first step into a market you do not yet know.

On this brief
Independence
Where the engagement specifies independence from any search that follows, that is a requirement of the engagement rather than a courtesy — an adviser to a board is not a candidate for it.
