The problem this seat exists to solve
The adviser will evaluate market priorities for an embedded cybersecurity capability. The assignment compares customer needs, integration burdens and routes to commercial value across potential applications. Its purpose is to focus scarce engineering and commercial resources on opportunities supported by evidence, rather than a long list of sectors in which security is important.
Analyse the barriers by use case
For each priority application, identify the system owner, buyer, technical approver and continuing operator. Review performance constraints, product lifetimes, update arrangements and assurance expectations. Determine whether the technology fits an existing decision cycle or would require customers to change architecture and procurement behaviour substantially.
Examine the alternatives available to customers and the cost of doing nothing. A differentiated technical mechanism is not automatically a differentiated business proposition. The adviser should explain where the capability creates a meaningful advantage and where integration effort may outweigh it.
What strong candidates bring
Candidates need experience in embedded security, industrial technology or a related deep-technology commercial role. They should understand product integration and customer buying processes, with the ability to test assumptions across technical and commercial audiences. Evidence of making market choices under resource constraints is particularly valuable.
Translate analysis into a sequence
Recommend a limited set of priority use cases and the evidence needed to pursue them. Identify partnerships, product changes and assurance work that would be required. Distinguish near-term opportunities from longer-term options whose prerequisites are not yet in place.
Deliver a comparative market assessment, recommended focus and practical validation plan. The adviser has no authority to commit engineering resources, approach counterparties on binding terms or change strategy independently. Management retains those decisions.
The engagement should leave leadership able to explain why selected markets deserve attention and what would cause that view to change. Findings must make uncertainty explicit, including where customer access or technical evidence is insufficient. Candidates should disclose interests in potential partners, customers or competing technologies so that the advice can be evaluated with appropriate context rather than assumed to be free of commercial incentives.

Before you apply — an advisory engagement
No office of director, and no appointment formalities.
An advisory engagement creates no directorship in Germany. There is no registry filing, no regulator pre-approval, no residency arithmetic and no statutory director liability — which is why it is so often the right first step into a market you do not yet know.
- On this brief
- Independence
- Where the engagement specifies independence from any search that follows, that is a requirement of the engagement rather than a courtesy — an adviser to a board is not a candidate for it.
