Organisational recovery organisation in Germany

The problem this seat exists to solve

The interim managing director will lead a business unit requiring a clearer operating direction and a credible route to improved performance. The mandate includes the approved profit and cash plan, customer delivery and management-team effectiveness. It requires determining what the unit can control and obtaining decisions on constraints that sit elsewhere in the enterprise.

Separate local economics from group constraints

Review revenue quality, contribution, working capital and the cost of serving customers. Identify allocations or internal arrangements that obscure the unit's actual economics. Test management explanations against transactions, operating evidence and customer outcomes.

Clarify the unit's purpose within the wider enterprise. Determine which activities support that purpose and which consume resources without a defensible role. Avoid launching a broad improvement programme before the principal performance drivers are understood.

Decisions that leave a viable operating unit

Agree a focused recovery plan with the accountable group executive or governing body. Implement changes to priorities, resource allocation and management routines within delegation. Resolve recurring cross-functional issues and make escalation specific where group policies or dependencies prevent action.

Assess the leadership team and address capability or performance gaps through appropriate processes. Communicate realistic commitments to employees and customers. Recovery must not depend on promises that require authority or resources the unit does not possess.

The successor should receive dependable management information, a coherent plan and a team capable of making ordinary decisions. Success means sustained improvement in the drivers of performance, not a temporary result produced by deferred cost or exceptional effort.

Major capital, structural and employment decisions remain subject to the relevant authority. The interim director must document unresolved constraints and the choices needed to address them. A useful handover makes clear what has changed, why the business is more viable and what assumptions still require testing, enabling the permanent leader to continue rather than restart the diagnosis.

Leadership evidence from applicants

Applicants should have led a business or substantial operating unit with direct financial and people accountability. They must explain how they separated structural constraints from execution weaknesses and how that distinction changed the plan. Experience working within a group while retaining clear local responsibility is important.

Before you apply — this is an executive role

An interim seat needs work authorisation. A board seat in Germany usually does not.

This is the single most common way a cross-border interim engagement falls apart after it has been agreed. The visa-free position that applies to a non-executive director attending board meetings does not extend to an executive or operating role.

Position in Germany
A supervisory board member attending meetings does not require a residence permit. A management-board (Vorstand) appointment for a non-EU national does, and is a substantially heavier process.
