Interim Director of Retail Supplier and Category Reset

Retail organisation in Germany

The problem this seat exists to solve

The director will lead an agreed commercial reset across selected retail categories, aligning assortment, supplier arrangements and operating execution. The mandate requires improving the quality of category decisions while maintaining continuity of supply and fair, professional relationships. It is an executive delivery role with accountability for implemented changes and their trading consequences.

Establish the category position

Review customer needs, range productivity, promotional commitments and supplier performance. Identify products that consume space and operational effort without a clear role. Examine whether commercial terms create incentives that conflict with stock productivity or customer value. Reconcile expected income with the actual obligations and evidence supporting it.

Execute an integrated reset

Lead category teams through prioritised assortment and sourcing decisions within approved authority. Coordinate changes with supply chain, stores and finance so that discontinued products, new lines and promotional plans are managed coherently. Ensure supplier discussions use accurate information and that commitments are documented through the proper process.

Major contract changes and decisions outside delegated limits require authorised approval and appropriate specialist input. The director must not substitute aggressive negotiation for a defensible category strategy. Consider supplier capability, concentration and transition risk alongside immediate commercial benefit.

Beyond the initial supplier discussions

Introduce category reviews that examine customer response, contribution, stock and execution together. Improve accountability for assumptions and follow-up after range changes. Encourage teams to surface weak evidence before commitments become difficult to reverse. Support capability development where commercial decisions have depended excessively on individual experience.

Commercial leadership for this reset

Applicants should have senior retail buying or commercial leadership experience with direct accountability for category results. They need evidence of leading cross-functional range or supplier change without avoidable disruption. Applications should describe a negotiation or assortment decision where a short-term gain was rejected for a stronger long-term outcome.

The business should retain clearer category roles, realistic supplier commitments and reliable review information. Success means improved range productivity and dependable execution, with customer choice and availability evaluated alongside margin. Handover must show who owns the remaining decisions and how the category plan will adapt when demand, costs or supply conditions change.

Before you apply — this is an executive role

An interim seat needs work authorisation. A board seat in Germany usually does not.

This is the single most common way a cross-border interim engagement falls apart after it has been agreed. The visa-free position that applies to a non-executive director attending board meetings does not extend to an executive or operating role.

Position in Germany
A supervisory board member attending meetings does not require a residence permit. A management-board (Vorstand) appointment for a non-EU national does, and is a substantially heavier process.
