Interim Managing Director of Professional Services

Professional services organisation in Germany

The problem this seat exists to solve

Applicants should have held substantial general-management responsibility in professional services or a closely comparable expertise-led business. Evidence must include direct accountability for commercial performance and delivery quality, not only strategy projects. Candidates should explain how they improved an underperforming service portfolio and managed disagreement among senior professionals.

Commercial leadership with delivery responsibility

The interim managing director will lead a professional-services business through a period of operational improvement, with responsibility for the approved business plan, client delivery and management team performance. The mandate requires a clear view of how expertise becomes profitable work: proposition quality, selling discipline, assignment staffing and the collection of earned fees must be considered together.

First establish the economic reality

Review the engagement portfolio, including work sold but not adequately scoped, projects dependent on individual specialists and fees at risk of dispute. Reconcile utilisation information with actual delivery effort. Determine whether weak contribution arises from pricing, execution, service mix or capacity that cannot be deployed. Avoid treating every economic problem as a requirement for additional sales.

The director will make operating decisions within delegated authority, reset the management cadence and implement an agreed improvement plan. This includes strengthening bid review, clarifying engagement ownership and ensuring that client commitments are matched to available expertise. Changes to partnership arrangements, ownership or reserved investment decisions remain with the appropriate governing body.

Lead the professional community

Work with practice leaders to distinguish legitimate professional autonomy from avoidable inconsistency. Establish expectations for collaboration, supervision and knowledge sharing without undermining the judgement required in specialist work. Address persistent delivery problems through evidence and appropriate people processes. Key-client discussions should reinforce confidence while remaining honest about capacity and delivery constraints.

What the permanent managing director should inherit

The successor should inherit a credible forecast, understood engagement economics and a management team capable of acting on them. Progress will be judged through delivery reliability, quality of revenue, cash conversion and sustainable contribution. The assignment is complete when performance no longer depends on repeated personal intervention by the interim leader and the business can distinguish growth that strengthens its capabilities from growth that merely increases activity.

Before you apply — this is an executive role

An interim seat needs work authorisation. A board seat in Germany usually does not.

This is the single most common way a cross-border interim engagement falls apart after it has been agreed. The visa-free position that applies to a non-executive director attending board meetings does not extend to an executive or operating role.

Position in Germany
A supervisory board member attending meetings does not require a residence permit. A management-board (Vorstand) appointment for a non-EU national does, and is a substantially heavier process.
