The problem this seat exists to solve
The lead will establish an executable portfolio of business and technology change. The assignment addresses the situation in which individual initiatives appear justified but collectively exceed available capacity or depend on incompatible sequencing. It requires practical authority over the portfolio process and the ability to bring difficult choices to decision-makers.
Build a common account of commitments
Review active and proposed work, intended outcomes, resources and dependencies. Identify initiatives that overlap, lack a clear owner or rely on the same scarce specialists. Confirm which commitments are mandatory or time-sensitive and which remain discretionary, using the appropriate owners to resolve interpretation.
Develop prioritisation options that make trade-offs visible. A ranked list alone is insufficient if it ignores dependencies or assumes teams can change direction without cost. Show what can proceed together, what should be sequenced and what would need to stop when a new priority is accepted.
Operate the decision process
Lead portfolio reviews with explicit choices and accountable follow-up. Ensure approved changes reach workstream plans and that deferred work does not continue informally. Reporting should show capacity and outcomes, not only spending and milestone status.
Experience suited to the mandate
Candidates need portfolio, programme or operational-change leadership with evidence of coordinating several initiatives. They should be comfortable challenging senior stakeholders and explaining uncertainty. A prior enterprise executive title is not necessary where the candidate has handled comparable decision complexity and delivered a functioning portfolio process.
The lead will own the agreed planning and prioritisation mechanism, while executives retain investment and strategic decisions. The engagement should leave clear portfolio ownership, a repeatable review rhythm and a realistic view of capacity.
What success looks like
Success is fewer conflicting commitments, better sequencing and more reliable delivery of the priorities the organisation has actually chosen. Handover must identify residual constraints and the assumptions behind the portfolio. The permanent team should understand how to accommodate a new demand without simply adding it to an already impossible plan. The lead must also make clear where improved coordination cannot substitute for a decision to reduce scope or provide additional resources.

Before you apply — this is an executive role
An interim seat needs work authorisation. A board seat in Germany usually does not.
This is the single most common way a cross-border interim engagement falls apart after it has been agreed. The visa-free position that applies to a non-executive director attending board meetings does not extend to an executive or operating role.
- Position in Germany
- A supervisory board member attending meetings does not require a residence permit. A management-board (Vorstand) appointment for a non-EU national does, and is a substantially heavier process.
