The problem this seat exists to solve
The director will strengthen oversight of investment in business and technology programmes. The role focuses on the relationship between expenditure, delivered capability and realised benefit. It requires practical delivery insight and financial literacy, with the judgement to distinguish an uncertain forecast from an investment case that lacks a credible mechanism for value.
Challenge the benefit logic
Review how proposals connect activities to operating outcomes. Ask who must change behaviour, which dependencies must be resolved and what resources are needed beyond the project budget. Benefits should have accountable owners and measures that do not depend solely on the programme team declaring success.
Examine cost estimates for transition, training, parallel operation and ongoing support. The board should understand whether savings require further action after technical delivery and whether that action has been approved and resourced. Avoid accepting a business case that counts benefits immediately while excluding the work needed to realise them.
Relevant candidate background
Candidates should have substantial programme, transformation, operations or finance leadership experience with accountability for investment outcomes. They need the ability to challenge senior management constructively and understand the responsibilities of a director. Prior CIO service is not essential; demonstrated judgement about complex change is.
Review decisions as evidence changes
Monitor performance against the original logic while allowing for genuine changes in conditions. Ask management to explain whether revised forecasts reflect learning, execution issues or a different scope. Support clear decisions about further investment rather than automatic continuation because money has already been spent.
Investment scrutiny belongs in the board's approval and review process; programme delivery and the actions that realise benefits remain with executive owners. The director should require an explicit return to the board when the economics or intended outcomes change materially, while respecting management's authority over routine delivery choices.
Expected contribution includes clearer investment choices, realistic benefit ownership and more disciplined post-implementation review. Candidates must disclose interests involving suppliers, advisers and relevant investment activities. The board will expect them to remain engaged with outcomes, including the possibility that an initiative delivered its planned technology but did not produce the operating change on which the financial case depended.

- Work authorisation
- A supervisory board member attending meetings does not require a residence permit. A management-board (Vorstand) appointment for a non-EU national does, and is a substantially heavier process.
