Industrial technology organisation in Germany
The problem this seat exists to solve
This director will bring commercial insight to board oversight of incentives, performance measures and growth quality in an industrial technology business. The mandate focuses on whether the organisation's targets encourage profitable, deliverable commitments or reward behaviours that transfer problems into implementation and customer support.
The board question behind incentives
The director will contribute to collective governance and may support relevant committee work as determined for the appointment. The role is not to design individual sales compensation plans personally, but to ensure that material incentive choices are consistent with strategy, risk appetite and long-term customer value.
Judgement about behaviour and commercial consequences
Candidates should have senior industrial technology commercial leadership experience, including responsibility for performance management and collaboration with finance and delivery functions. They must be comfortable with financial reporting and able to interpret the behavioural consequences of targets. Experience correcting unintended incentive effects is particularly relevant.
Applicants should demonstrate independence and discretion, especially when challenging successful executives whose reported results are strong. Prior board or remuneration-related experience is useful but not mandatory if equivalent judgement is evident.
Follow the measures into the deal
Examine the relationship between bookings, revenue, cash, margin and customer outcomes in executive and commercial performance measures. Ask how multi-year contracts, renewals, cancellations and delivery failures affect reported achievement. Challenge arrangements that reward volume without regard to contract quality or the resources needed to fulfil commitments.
Review how product, sales and delivery teams share accountability for complex deals. Assess whether escalation is discouraged by targets or whether commercial staff can identify unrealistic promises without losing standing. Consider the effect of incentives on channel behaviour, customer concentration and the proliferation of bespoke solutions.
Test the design against actual outcomes
The director should encourage evidence from actual outcomes rather than relying on the theoretical design of a scheme. Repeated exceptions, end-period discounting or recurring delivery disputes may signal a problem that headline performance conceals.
The director will help the board assess whether commercial behaviour supports sustainable performance and whether reporting reveals material trade-offs. Eligibility, conflicts and committee allocation will be evaluated for the specific seat. Management remains responsible for implementation. Success is better alignment between what is rewarded and what the enterprise can deliver profitably, with clear oversight of exceptions and no reliance on a single headline growth measure.
