Industrial technology organisation in Germany
The problem this seat exists to solve
This board appointment requires commercial judgement about digital products sold into industrial environments. The director will challenge how proposed offerings solve operational problems, generate repeatable revenue and remain supportable over the life of the equipment or process they serve. Technical novelty is not sufficient evidence of customer value.
A commercial director for the digital product portfolio
Candidates should have senior commercial or general-management experience in industrial technology, with direct exposure to enterprise buying processes and product-led growth. Relevant experience includes scaling industrial software, connected equipment or technology-enabled services. Applicants must be able to explain how they have linked customer requirements to product investment and improved the quality of a commercial decision.
Board experience is useful, but the ability to move from executive advocacy to independent challenge is essential. Strong candidates recognise when technical specialists are needed and can interrogate their conclusions without pretending to replace them.
Repeatable product or customer-specific engineering?
Examine the relationship between development spending, implementation effort, recurring revenue and ongoing support obligations. Challenge business cases that treat every deployment as repeatable while relying on substantial customer-specific engineering. Assess whether pricing captures value without creating adoption barriers or commitments the delivery organisation cannot sustain.
Supplier choices and continuing obligations
Review the strategic implications of open interfaces, proprietary components and reliance on external technology providers. Ask how security, availability and product retirement responsibilities affect long-term economics. Ensure that growth measures distinguish profitable adoption from pilots, discounted installations or revenue that carries disproportionate future obligations.
Collective oversight of product investment
The seat contributes to collective oversight of strategy, investment and risk. Management owns product decisions and execution; the director's responsibility is to ensure that important choices reach the board with credible economics, explicit dependencies and a balanced account of uncertainty.
The director will help the board evaluate product priorities, understand the cost of sustaining existing commitments and follow the commercial outcomes of approved investments. Independence, conflicts and appointment-specific eligibility will be assessed. Success means clearer product economics and stronger strategic choices, including disciplined decisions to stop, simplify or defer an offering. The role does not carry authority to direct sales teams, approve individual discounts or negotiate customer contracts.
