Interim Chief Executive Officer — Business Portfolio Prioritisation

General management organisation in United Arab Emirates

The problem this seat exists to solve

Lead a portfolio-level reset across operating activities with different growth prospects, cash needs and management demands. The interim CEO will establish where the enterprise should concentrate resources and translate approved priorities into operating commitments. The task requires judgement about the combined business, including dependencies that individual plans may overlook.

Capital allocation across competing operating demands

Compare the forward economics of continued investment, selective improvement, reduced scope and exit. Identify the cash and leadership capacity required before each activity can deliver its proposed contribution. Distinguish an attractive market from a business that the organisation is equipped to serve.

Examine shared customers, systems, people and obligations. A decision to reduce one activity may remove support for another or leave costs that cannot be eliminated promptly. Present these consequences alongside the apparent saving or disposal value.

The executive route from decision to a coherent portfolio

Reallocate resources through a clear sequence with accountable operating leaders. Stop or reshape initiatives that conflict with the approved direction, and verify that the expected capacity is actually released. Prevent retained activities from quietly rebuilding commitments that the portfolio decision was intended to remove.

Maintain an enterprise view of cash, operating risk and leadership bandwidth during implementation. Bring material changes in assumptions back to the governing body before continuing on a superseded rationale. The interim CEO controls execution within delegation; ownership decisions and reserved capital approvals remain with the authorised board or shareholders.

Leave operating plans that reconcile to the enterprise's capital and capacity constraints. Establish review triggers tied to the assumptions on which investment decisions depend. Management should be able to explain why each retained activity belongs in the portfolio and what would cause that conclusion to change.

Success is a coherent set of funded priorities and visible implementation, with no reliance on optimistic aggregation of plans that cannot all be delivered together.

Judgement candidates must substantiate

Candidates should have chief executive, divisional or comparable profit-and-loss experience across more than one material activity. Demonstrate the ability to compare unlike businesses without relying on a single financial ratio or a uniform growth target.

Applicants should explain a resource allocation decision that required reducing an established activity to support a stronger alternative. The assessment will examine the evidence, transition cost and treatment of continuing obligations. Experience building alignment among leaders with competing interests is essential.

Before you apply — this is an executive role

An interim seat needs work authorisation. A board seat in the United Arab Emirates usually does not.

This is the single most common way a cross-border interim engagement falls apart after it has been agreed. The visa-free position that applies to a non-executive director attending board meetings does not extend to an executive or operating role.

Position in the United Arab Emirates
A non-resident non-executive director attending board meetings travels on a visit visa. A resident director role, or any controlled function at a DIFC or ADGM firm, typically requires residency and a work permit.
