Enterprise technology and AI organisation in United Arab Emirates

The problem this seat exists to solve

When an AI-enabled service moves from experiment to material business use, the board must understand what changes in the enterprise's exposure. This director will strengthen that judgement while sharing the full responsibilities of a board member. The seat concerns the relationship between commercial value, operating accountability and risk, rather than oversight of technical novelty for its own sake.

Three lines of challenge

First, examine the business decision being delegated to or influenced by a model. Ask what evidence supports the use case, who bears the consequence of error and whether management can detect a change in performance. A technically impressive demonstration does not establish that the operating process is ready.

Second, test the control around deployment. Review ownership of data, model changes, access and incident response. Challenge vague reliance on a supplier's assurances, and ask how the organisation would suspend or replace the service without losing essential capability. Human review must be assessed for its real authority and capacity, not simply its presence in a policy.

Third, connect the investment to strategy. Consider whether scale creates defensible value or magnifies an uncertain dependency. Require management to compare continued development with simpler alternatives and to make the cost of monitoring visible.

Judgement required of the director

Candidates should have held consequential operating or governance responsibility for technology risk and commercial delivery. They must be able to interrogate AI evidence without presenting themselves as experts in every model or application. Applications should describe a deployment decision they changed, delayed or stopped, and the evidence that justified their position.

Board responsibility in practice

The director will contribute to strategy, risk appetite and capital oversight, with committee duties determined by the board. They will not approve individual models or become the executive owner of AI controls. Appointment is subject to the governance and eligibility requirements of the actual entity, including assessment of conflicts.

Useful contribution will make management's accountability clearer and board information more decision-relevant. The board should understand the limits of the evidence, the consequences of failure and the conditions under which continued deployment remains justified.

Board appointment
Compensation
AED 240,000–420,000 per year (indicative annual board fee)
Time commitment in this market
PJSC boards typically meet at least six times a year with a general assembly cycle; DIFC and ADGM regulated boards meet quarterly with heavier committee work.

Before you apply — United Arab Emirates

Foreign nationals sit on UAE boards routinely, and the 2021 companies law removed the general Emirati-ownership requirement — but sector rules, Emiratisation expectations and the free-zone regulators' approval processes still shape who can be appointed where.

Residency test
No general residency requirement for a PJSC director, but some regulated and strategic sectors carry nationality or residency conditions, and free-zone regulated firms have their own residency expectations for certain controlled functions.
Nationality test
Certain strategic sectors retain Emirati ownership and board-composition conditions; check the sector before assuming the general position applies.
Work authorisation
A non-resident non-executive director attending board meetings travels on a visit visa. A resident director role, or any controlled function at a DIFC or ADGM firm, typically requires residency and a work permit.
Tenure limit once appointed
Board terms run for three years and are renewable. There is no absolute cap, but the SCA guide's independence criteria are applied at each renewal.
