The boardroom
Examine the promise without taking over the campaign
Public credibility depends partly on how an enterprise connects its claims with evidence and operating responsibility. Marketing can make that connection clearer, but it can also compress distinctions until a message means more than the underlying work supports. I would bring a board questions about the scope of a promise, the audience represented by a finding and the practical conditions in which a communication is received. The purpose is to improve collective judgement about consequential statements, not to turn directors into a second creative approval committee.
My own paper-free insurer proposal illustrates the risk. A review of thirty-six journeys found twenty-one without paper requirements and fifteen that still required paper under the examined conditions. I had approved language about the whole enterprise. The correction cost ₹38 lakh, including ₹12 lakh of unrecoverable placement and ₹26 lakh of new work. A board should be able to see both the evidence mismatch and the accountability behind it. The revised material alone would not explain why the earlier approval had allowed a narrower result to become a larger public identity.
The governance response should be proportionate to the finding. That journey review did not determine the legal necessity of every requirement or identify a customer financial loss. It showed that the scope of the claim was unsupported. Management needed to correct that claim and improve the connection between creative review and service evidence. Directors could ask how such connections are maintained as the underlying work changes, without requiring the board to inspect every campaign line or making marketing responsible for professional decisions it does not own.
Audience evidence raises another interpretive problem. A study of 1,250 online volunteers reported 54% recognition within its sample. Its recruitment did not support a headline about the entire Indian market, and recognition was not a measure of trust or a policy outcome. We withdrew the broader claim and funded a separate inquiry, whose findings were pending at the December 2023 review. Oversight should ask whether management's proposed inference fits the research question and population, and whether qualified expertise is available to explain the remaining uncertainty.
The purpose of an audience signal also matters. I declined a sales-retargeting proposal based on 120,000 browser identifiers associated with service queries. A smaller contextual campaign commitment followed. That decision did not establish a conversion improvement or settle all privacy obligations. It required marketing to explain why an available segment should be used for a particular approach rather than assume its availability answered the question. A board can examine the quality of that decision process while leaving specific handling conditions with the responsible teams and advisers.
Creative and media delivery have continuing obligations of their own. During an agency transition, six of fifteen asset sets had incomplete portable-permission accounts; four were resolved and two replaced. Outdoor review found eighteen of forty-eight installations difficult to read under the observed conditions, with five ultimately withdrawn after correction. These are different problems, but each shows why a completed purchase or booking is not the whole communication result. The account should preserve what can be used, what can be read and what remains outside the approved scope.
As a director I would seek to understand how management identifies the claims that deserve more scrutiny, who owns the supporting evidence and how a correction can be made without suppressing inconvenient findings. I would listen to service, research and professional colleagues whose knowledge may change the marketing interpretation. Experience should make my questions more useful, not give me authority to direct another enterprise's campaigns from the boardroom. I would work through the chair and committee arrangements and be ready to revise a view when the evidence does not support my first reading.
My preparation is not an appointment decision. Registration and proficiency assessment were completed in May and September 2026 in this fictional account. Employer consent, qualified eligibility and conflict review, and practical capacity would still be required. I have no statutory seat or personal company holding, but relationships across agencies, media and insurance need disclosure. Eighteen days remain provisional. The contribution I seek is a better understanding of what the enterprise can responsibly say and support, with executive owners retaining responsibility for the work behind the promise.
On governance
A message can be attractive, accurate in one setting and still too broad for the place we intend to use it. I ask what the audience will believe, which evidence supports that belief and what changes when the message travels beyond its original context.
