The boardroom
A board should see what the public statement depends on
I want a board to see the organisation behind a public position before it accepts the position as part of the company's growth account. A message may look like a communication decision while depending on service capacity, partner relationships, claims information or another function's work. The board should understand those dependencies without becoming the group that approves each piece of creative material.
My executive experience gives me a practical basis for asking about them. Since July 2020 I have presented marketing recommendations at Hengsuyuan Insurance, including choices that reduced exposure or changed a planned programme. That exposure is separate from my non-executive directorship at Qinshao Learning, which began in September 2023. The latter requires me to consider the whole company and respect management's responsibility to run it, not simply apply a communication lens to every decision.
The flood communication case illustrates a distinction a board should be able to examine: a contractual commitment does not settle the judgement about continuing with a message. Stopping the promotional schedule incurred CNY460,000 of unrecoverable placement cost. The alternative service communication did not erase that cost or establish a measured gain in trust. A serious decision account can retain both the expense and the reason for changing course, allowing oversight without a fabricated claim that the choice paid for itself.
I would ask management where the authority to make such a change sits and whether the organisation can use it in practice. A formal escalation route may be ineffective if managers believe that departing from the original plan will always be treated as failure. The board's role is not to manage the incident. It is to understand whether accountability, incentives and information allow the executive team to respond credibly when the circumstances supporting a plan have changed.
The service-centre campaign presents another dependency. The proposed eleven-centre footprint assumed a common operating basis that the review did not support. Beginning at seven was a marketing choice informed by the responsible service owners. In oversight, I would ask whether a public growth statement rests on capability that exists where the demand will arrive, and how management will decide when extension is justified. A brand review should not become a substitute certification of operating readiness.
Distribution relationships add a further boundary. An insurer may share its identity with an intermediary without controlling that firm's entire operation. A board needs an intelligible account of the responsibilities within a material partnership, including how issues and changes are handled. I can contribute experience of the work around shared communication while recognising that legal, product and commercial judgements have their own owners. Neither a large event nor a common logo is sufficient evidence that the relationship works as intended.
Customer stories also deserve scrutiny beyond their promotional appeal. A selected account can be accurate and still create a wider impression that its facts do not establish. My decision to replace proposed claim films with fictional service explanations kept the underlying service relationship outside the production brief. For a board, the useful question is whether the company's review can genuinely change an intended output, and whether relevant specialists can raise concerns before the sunk cost makes reconsideration unusually difficult.
At Qinshao I am continuing to develop the wider financial and governance understanding required of a director. I do not claim that a marketing career alone qualifies me for every committee or that my existing non-executive appointment establishes independence elsewhere. A proposed additional role would need its own relationship assessment, a clear contribution and a calendar that includes exceptional demands as well as ordinary meetings.
My current board commitment is fourteen annual days; I propose eighteen additional days for a suitable new role, subject to employer consent and the actual responsibility. I would bring questions about public reputation, service assumptions and partnerships into collective discussion, while remaining willing to learn from colleagues with other expertise. The contribution should help the board examine the company's choices more carefully, not create a second executive marketing function around the table.
On governance
I want our public voice to recognise the customer's circumstances before it asks for their attention. A media placement can be contractually available and still be the wrong thing for an insurer to say at that moment.

I am available for selected conversations about insurer reputation, intermediary communication and the relationship between public messages and operating capacity. I hold one non-executive directorship and would assess any additional commitment alongside my executive work and existing board calendar. A proposed contribution should have a defined purpose, appropriate consent and relationships that can be handled credibly.
