Understand what the transaction leaves the business carrying

I make retail commitments visible in the financial account: what a customer has prepaid, what a business account still owes and what a purchasing incentive would require us to carry.

01

Follow prepaid customer value through the goods still owed

I examine how a retail report distinguishes customer funding from the goods later supplied against it. A voucher receipt and a redemption can both be valid records without representing two separate sales opportunities. My own controller mistake came from approving a combined campaign total without questioning that meaning. The repair required finance and shop teams to explain the stages in language management could use, while preserving the statutory ledger and customer entitlement. I would approach another programme by defining the cohort, opening balances, movements and outstanding promise before interpreting performance. This is not a universal accounting or tax instruction:qualified advisers must assess the actual terms. My contribution is to stop a management narrative from celebrating the same funding twice or making a customer balance disappear inside an attractive headline.

02

Treat an accepted order as part of the exposure decision

I work with commercial teams to understand the financial consequence of releasing an order before it becomes a receivable. Looking only at invoices can leave a pending credit commitment outside a limit intended to govern both. The relevant basis must be explicit; not every order or advance has the same treatment. In our case, the internal limit covered outstanding receivables plus proposed credit releases. We split a ₹68 lakh order so that ₹36 lakh used available capacity and ₹32 lakh required cleared advance funding. That did not settle the existing ₹84 lakh balance or prove the customer's future reliability. I want a workable route for the commercial team, with the funding condition observed before release and any exception approved by the person who actually carries that authority.

03

Read the stock consequence behind a rebate threshold

A purchasing incentive can create pressure to buy for the financial period rather than the customer's expected demand. I ask which purchases would happen anyway, which are additional and what stock the proposal leaves the business carrying. The rebate may be real under its terms while the overall purchase remains unattractive. Our proposed extra ₹1.4 crore order would have reached a ₹10 crore threshold and a hypothetical ₹30 lakh rebate, but it also brought an uncertain selling period and possible markdowns. I worked with buying colleagues to compare the actual merchandise commitment, not simply subtract the rebate from the invoice and declare success. A decision may still favour a larger purchase when demand and capacity support it. Finance should explain the conditions that make the choice sensible instead of treating every discount as a benefit worth pursuing.

04

Make the financial challenge usable by the commercial owner

I lead finance so that a question arrives with enough context for the responsible colleague to act. The commercial head negotiates customer terms and purchasing arrangements; finance explains exposure, cash and the implications of the proposed commitment. Material exceptions go to the appropriate executive or board authority. That division matters because a CFO can undermine accountability by becoming an informal buyer or by refusing a proposal without describing a viable alternative. I ask my team to state the decision, the evidence, the unresolved assumption and the person who will review what happens next. I also expect them to challenge a presentation I have already supported. The voucher correction is part of my leadership account because a reporting discipline is weak if it can question everyone except its senior sponsor.

A leadership conviction

The commercial appeal of a transaction does not describe every obligation it creates. I want finance to show the customer promise still outstanding, the exposure still awaiting payment and the stock still requiring a buyer before an attractive number becomes a decision.
