A French regional-aircraft manufacturer commissions a five-month digital-thread design to connect configuration, maintenance and service evidence, producing accepted interfaces before a new fleet-support programme launches.
The mandate
Fleet-support teams cannot reliably connect an aircraft’s effective configuration with maintenance instructions, service bulletins, component history and airline-record feedback across several generations. Engineers reconstruct the thread for difficult cases, but the proposed digital platform assumes cleaner identifiers and synchronisation than operators can provide. A new support programme needs a bounded architecture before long-term supplier commitments are signed.
The deliverable is an Aircraft Maintenance Digital-Thread Blueprint for three high-consequence journeys: configuration-sensitive troubleshooting, service-bulletin embodiment and rotable-component history. It will define authoritative records, effective configuration, identity, provenance, correction, exchange, access and evidence retention. Two reference journeys must work across manufacturer, airline and MRO boundaries without treating one central copy as automatically authoritative.
Milestone one at week four delivers journey reconstructions, source-authority disputes and failure economics. Week nine concludes milestone two with the target thread, contracts and architecture choices. At week sixteen, milestone three supplies two working references and partner disruption tests. The accepted blueprint, supplier schedules, business case and implementation governance form milestone four at week twenty-two.
Acceptance requires maintenance engineers to reconstruct ten unseen configuration-dependent cases, tracing every instruction and component event to effective evidence; airline and MRO participants must acknowledge correction and exchange obligations; and Quality must approve intended-use boundaries. The engineering chief signs only after an internal team repeats a partner-loss scenario without consultant assistance or unsafe reliance on a stale replica.
The client will provide approved configuration records, maintenance instructions, bulletins, component histories, airline exchanges, technical queries, supplier proposals and quality requirements. Airline and MRO representatives will join selected tests under data agreements. Client teams implement privileged integrations, while Engineering and Quality resolve authoritative-record disputes within three working days.
Why this is external work
Configuration, publications and service teams each own systems that look authoritative within their boundary, while platform bidders promote centralisation aligned to their products. Airline and MRO partners need a neutral design that respects their records and correction realities. External work can test the full maintenance thread before procurement locks assumptions into a costly implementation.
What you will own
- Map aircraft, modification, component, bulletin, instruction and maintenance-event identity across manufacturer, airline, MRO and supplier records.
- Define effective configuration and source authority through installation, removal, interchange, correction and delayed partner acknowledgement.
- Specify exchange contracts for provenance, version, applicability, receipt, rejection, correction, retention and partner exit.
- Build reference journeys that expose uncertainty and conflicting evidence rather than silently choosing the most convenient platform record.
- Exercise late embodiment, rotable swap, missing airline acknowledgement, superseded instruction and unavailable partner-system scenarios.
- Compare architecture and supplier options through traceability, partner burden, operability, lock-in, migration and lifecycle cost.
- Transfer qualification scripts, contract governance and digital-thread change control to named engineering, service and Quality owners.
Candidate qualifications
- Led aircraft configuration, maintenance-information or digital-thread programmes across manufacturer, airline and MRO boundaries.
- Reconstructed effective aircraft configuration through component movement, modification and delayed record exchange.
- Governed applicability of maintenance instructions and service bulletins without substituting a digital representation for authorised engineering data.
- Negotiated practical exchange and correction obligations with operators and maintainers using heterogeneous legacy systems.
- Tested partner-loss and stale-replica scenarios before committing to a fleet-support architecture or platform supplier.
- Delivered vendor-neutral design and internal qualification capability while preserving airworthiness and Quality decision rights.
Non-negotiables
- The named architect must lead Toulouse workshops and participate in representative airline and MRO evidence tests.
