A national hydropower operator needs a sixteen-month executive to recover runner, wicket-gate and governor spares after outage plans exposed obsolete drawings, unsupported metallurgy and pooled inventory that cannot fit the assigned units.

The mandate

The operator’s next outage programme assumes common runner, wicket-gate, seal, bearing and governor spares across units that were commissioned in different eras and subsequently modified without complete configuration records. Warehouse labels repeat original equipment numbers, while drawings, metallurgy, actual dimensions and installed revisions disagree. A recent inspection found that a supposedly pooled emergency part could not be fitted. The board needs an executive who can turn nominal stock into unit-specific recovery readiness before monsoon inflow and outage windows collide.

The leader will establish a fleet control room linking unit configuration, condition findings, outage sequence, physical stock, repair routes, raw-material availability and transport access. Suspect commonality or a newly condemned component receives a documented contain, inspect, repair, manufacture, cannibalise or outage-resequence decision within forty-eight hours. Weekly station reviews must distinguish certified fit-for-purpose cover from unverified shelf quantity and expose long-lead metallurgy or machining before outage mobilisation.

Sixteen months cover physical verification, two seasonal planning cycles, manufacture or repair of the most exposed packages and one complete permanent-team handover. The appointment ends on the stated date even if a capital refurbishment continues. Exit evidence includes verified unit bills, preservation status, critical drawings, approved repair routes, supplier capacity, transport plans, outage kits, decision logs and two trained successors who can run the readiness review without consultant dependence.

Authority includes approved recovery spend, inspection priority, transfer of operator-owned stock, supplier escalation and outage-material sequencing. The leader may quarantine a part with uncertain identity or evidence and may recommend resequencing when material readiness is false. Engineering approves design equivalence, metallurgy and repair disposition; Generation authorises outage changes; Quality accepts records and inspection; site safety controls work; Procurement awards new contracts above delegated thresholds.

Plant refurbishment strategy, turbine redesign, civil works, generation dispatch, major capital sanction and permanent warehouse transformation sit outside scope. Foundry, machine-shop, original-equipment, inspection, logistics and utility interests must be declared. Controlled drawings remain in approved repositories. Cannibalisation requires a named donor unit, condition evidence, preservation plan and accountable approval; it cannot become an invisible transfer that creates the next station’s failure.

This is neither a warehouse clean-up nor a generic maintenance transformation. A hydropower spare becomes useful only when identity, dimensions, metallurgy, revision, preservation, repair evidence, lifting route and outage sequence fit one installed unit. The operator needs someone who has discovered those mismatches before dismantling, negotiated viable repair capacity and left configuration truth that station teams trust.

What you will own

  • Build the unit-by-unit critical-spare baseline from installed configuration, drawings, measurements, condition history, outage scope and physical stock.
  • Quarantine false-common, unidentified, degraded or unsupported items and drive engineering disposition without relabelling uncertainty as availability.
  • Secure foundry, forging, machining, coating, balancing, inspection and governor-repair capacity against the actual outage sequence.
  • Establish preservation, dimensional verification, material traceability, storage, lifting and remote-site transport evidence for ready spares.
  • Run make, repair, pool, cannibalise and outage-resequence decisions with lifecycle cost, lead time and donor-unit consequence visible.
  • Assemble outage kits and test their documentary and physical completeness before crews, cranes and water windows are committed.
  • Hand over verified bills, drawings, repair routes, supplier commitments, dashboards, decision logs and two assessed permanent successors.

Candidate qualifications

  • Led turbine, rotating-equipment or critical-spares recovery across a multi-station hydropower, hydro-mechanical or comparable generation fleet.
  • Has resolved runner, wicket-gate, seal, bearing or governor shortages using inspection, repair, manufacture and controlled interchangeability.
  • Understands installed-configuration variance, hydraulic turbine metallurgy, dimensional verification, balancing, preservation and remote outage logistics.
  • Has challenged false inventory commonality and converted engineering evidence into a credible unit-specific readiness decision.
  • Can hold executive material authority while respecting design, quality, generation, site-safety and procurement approval boundaries.
  • Has completed a seasonal recovery with trained successors and durable configuration records, not a supplier-dependent emergency workaround.

Non-negotiables

  • Can relocate to Kathmandu and spend approximately sixty percent of the term at generating stations, workshops and suppliers.
  • Brings direct hydro-turbine or closely comparable large rotating-equipment recovery depth; inventory management alone is insufficient.
  • Will disclose original-equipment, foundry, machine-shop, inspection, logistics and utility interests before accessing controlled drawings.
  • Accepts no engineering-equivalence, metallurgy, quality-release, generation-dispatch, site-safety or undelegated contract-award authority.
