Fraud-Loss and Reimbursement Recovery Leader — Digital Banking

Urgent / Replacement

Fraud-Loss and Reimbursement Recovery Leader mandate in Lagos, Nigeria · Pan-African Digital Banking

A Lagos digital bank needs a ten-month finance leader after fraud cases, customer reimbursement, recoveries and scheme claims ceased reconciling across products and legal entities.

The mandate

Card, transfer, account-takeover and lending fraud cases move through different tools, while customer credits may be provisional, final, reversed or shared with another institution. Scheme claims and law-enforcement recoveries arrive after loss recognition, and case closures do not reliably update receivables. A coordinated fraud event produced a material ledger true-up and the finance-control leader’s departure.

The ten-month assignment begins within ten days and covers case taxonomy, customer reimbursement, provisional credit, loss recognition, recovery receivable, scheme and counterparty claim, charge-off, currency, entity allocation, close and conduct reporting. It must establish 120 controlled days across core products while preserving investigation, customer-outcome, suspicious-reporting and legal decisions.

Permanent recruitment starts in month five. Handover requires a case-to-ledger map, reconciled open losses and recoveries, ageing and impairment rules, four controlled closes, customer-outcome bridges and two mass-event simulations. During a six-week overlap, the successor must resolve an unseen cross-channel attack involving provisional credits and disputed scheme recovery, then defend the financial and customer views independently.

The role may reject unsupported finance treatment, require case attestations, set recognition and reconciliation thresholds, approve delegated corrections, redirect the authorised USD 24 million remediation budget and replace temporary finance leads. It cannot decide fraud culpability, customer reimbursement entitlement, account restriction, suspicious reporting, prosecution, scheme dispute, public communication, accounting policy or permanent appointments.

Investigation, prevention strategy, model tuning, customer adjudication, regulatory notification and legal recovery remain outside scope. The leader may require their status as financial evidence but cannot delay a fair customer outcome to improve reported loss. Any extension is limited to a named regulatory or scheme closure event and cannot substitute for permanent leadership.

Why this seat is open

Fraud Operations tracks cases, Customer Care manages reimbursement, Legal and schemes pursue recovery, and Finance records outcomes later. The mass event exposed that the departing leader’s manual reconciliations were the only link across them. Temporary authority is required to restore financial truth without trespassing into investigation or customer decisions.

What you will own

  • Map fraud event, case, transaction, customer decision, provisional credit, final reimbursement, recovery and ledger identifiers.
  • Reconcile gross exposure, prevented amount, customer loss, bank loss, receivable, recovery cash and scheme allocation.
  • Define recognition, ageing, impairment, write-off and reversal evidence for scheme, counterparty and legal recoveries.
  • Govern cross-product and cross-entity allocation, duplicate case, reopened decision, currency and reporting cut-off.
  • Lead mass-event scenarios involving cards, transfers, account takeover, provisional credits and uncertain recoveries.
  • Maintain customer-outcome-to-finance bridges without influencing investigation, entitlement or suspicious-reporting judgement.
  • Transfer four closes, 120 controlled days, reconciled cases and the unseen cross-channel event to the permanent leader.

Candidate qualifications

  • Held senior fraud-finance, loss-control or customer-remediation finance authority in digital or retail banking.
  • Reconciled case systems, reimbursements, scheme claims, legal recoveries, receivables and ledgers across products.
  • Distinguished prevented loss, customer loss, bank loss, provisional credit and uncertain recovery consistently.
  • Protected fair customer outcomes while challenging unsupported financial treatment during major fraud events.
  • Worked with investigators, schemes, Legal, Compliance, Customer Operations and auditors across clear boundaries.
  • Completed succession through controlled closes and a combined cross-channel fraud-and-recovery scenario under live service conditions.

Non-negotiables

  • Can start within ten days and complete four operations residencies plus both mass-event simulations.
  • Will disclose relationships with banks, payment schemes, fraud vendors, regulators, law firms and recovery agents.
  • Brings case-level fraud-loss and reimbursement control; financial-crime investigations alone are insufficient.
  • Will not determine culpability, customer entitlement, suspicious reporting, prosecution, scheme disputes or model settings.
  1. 49 words maximum. Describe a fraud loss that changed after reimbursement or recovery evidence was reconciled.
  2. 49 words maximum. How would you prevent finance pressure from delaying a fair customer outcome?
  3. 49 words maximum. What cross-channel event must the permanent leader command before handover?
